FIrst let me say that I have not handled the CZ 452 Youth Scout Rifle, but reading here and in other places, it appears to be what I'd like for my 8 yr old son...BUT...I live in BFE and I'd have to take a chance and order one and hope it gets here before Christmas. So here's are the choices before me 1) Marlin 15YN.. I see nothing NOT to like about it except it's a tad bit heavier than the others. Looks like a adult rifle scaled down 2) Savage Cub... seems to be of good quality...good handling...really heavy trigger. Not sure I like the peep site with very large rear aperture. 3) Not the Chipmunk, but the other little rifle that WalMart sells...looks like a toy...chintzy bolt. I like the Marlin, but cant't find any data on accuracy. Anyone? Also, do you think a kid will outgrow a single-shot bolt too quickly? Thanks folks.

I still remember my first .22 on Christmas morning, a Marlin Model 60, that 19 years later is still a good little shooter. I was a little late to the whole shooting thing, I was 15-16 when I got my first rifle. My folks weren't into shooting so an Uncle started me out but my parents made him wait till I was a little older.
I too like the Marlin 15YN. I have a buddy who bought his daughter the Savage Cub, she enjoys it as well. I'm kind of a Marlin person myself.
Have you had a chance to look at a Henry Mini-Bolt? I believe it has a synthetic stock so it should be light weight. I haven't seen one but heard they are kinda nice.

I got my son (now 12) a Chipmunk, two days before he was born. :wink:
So he had it for a good long time. But at 8, you've got a pretty short life for that kind of rifle with your kid, unless he's the first of many. I'd suggest a slightly bigger gun and buy a second stock, cut off the one and then replace it as needed.

As for accuracy, I don't know of many 22s that don't shoot like gangbusters.

I have the little Marlin. It has been used by my first born (now in Hi-school) and is now being used by my 1st grade and Kindergarden kids.

The gun is plenty accurate, but is too heavy for the little ones. I saw a cricket at Wally World and like its weight and light trigger. It also has a peep sight. If I were to do it over again I would look into the cricket or mini-bolt. The wee little ones are just not very strong for holding a 4 1/4 lb gun.

My first shooting experience was with the Glenfield Model 10 Chipmunk. Bought one several years ago for youngest son, cut stock off, he grew into the 10/22, now I have lost the cutoff stock. I have really good gunsmith that has reconstructed the cutoff into a full size stock. Glancing at it you can't tell the difference. I hated to pay $49+shipping for a new stock. I am keeping the Model 10. I really like it. I do have two other 22 that are the Romainian training rifles. Put a scope on one and it is nice, 'smith is putting a Precision something or other peep sight on the other. Some kind of competition sight. Doing it for $30 so I can't be hurt on a $50 rifle. Bolt action 5rd magazines.
