unidentified animal
« on: November 26, 2003, 02:50:14 AM »
Last week in the Adirondacks I saw an animal I could not identify.  It was about 60 yards out in the pencil brush and to the best of my vision this is what I saw.  It was about 3 feet long not including a short tail or the head, looked to be about 10 to 12 inches deep through the body, had short legs maybe 6 to 10 inches, and was dark to the point of appearing black.  It appeared to weigh 30-40 lbs. It moved like a weasel.
My first thought was a fisher but after looking them up this thing was way too big.

Hi Lee,
Maybe it was a heavily spotted Lynx. Making it appear darker than normal. They get to be between 2 and 4 feet long with the tail. If there was snow on the ground it may also have looked like the legs were shorter than they were.
Just a thought.

Hey, I see you're also in the Catskills. Where about are you. I'm in New Kingston which is near Margaretville.

Stay Safe,
Franz

The info from the Fisher thread said that they had a max weight of about 6 kilo which is about 15 pounds.  This was definetly bigger than that.

I notice that size and weight do vary to the amount of availabe food in the area too.  I have seen big coyotes in my camp the size of female german shepards.                                                             BigBill
