Dictator build
« on: December 13, 2009, 02:27:03 PM »

It's getting close to New Years and I decided that I would finish my Dictator build. This is actually early for me. To decide to finish a project before it's time to shoot it. I usually have to watch out for the wet paint when it's time to shoot. I might even get to shoot this one before New Years. Better fly high Santa!!

It has a chamber 1"wide X 1 1/2" beep made it with a ball end mill. In the white sacks behind it is the ammo. Metal cans from slim fast just need to fill with concrete. The carriage is proportioned to a 8" Dictator. I left off the fancy hooks on the bottom this will be a shooter and I wanted it to slide easily. I still have to work out the elevation adjustment. And some finishing looks, the carriage was started last year.

Good welds? Ha Ha Are you looking at that cracker box (Lincoln) in the back ground? That is a chair I got three more of them around the shop. The cores have been removed and sold for scrap. The welder is behind me when I took the pic. Miller shop master 300amp. The red paint on the barrel (drop) indicates that it is 4130 heat treated and normalized to a RC of 35-40. The breach plug is also 4130 Threaded to 6tpi acme and has a interference fit. The barrel had to be heated before you could screw the breach in. Then reheated to 600deg F and a root pass of 11018 rod then 7018 then a cover pass of mig to make it easer to turn round. And let cool in lime to reduce stress. It was still warm 18 hours later.  ;D

Well I have a bigger drop but it is 4' long and needs to be cut. But it wont fit in my lathe or the steady rest is to small. It's 8" in diameter and the steady rest only holds 7". So it has to go down the road to get cut and built. Or tell I make a bigger steady rest. And I wanted to shoot it now. And what better excuse. Now I have to make a new carriage to fit the barrel and a barrel to fit the carriage.   :)

Yea no kiddin , it sounds like you know what you are doing !

why would you put such an effort on an ill fitting carriage? I mean NO disrespect but it is a dictor in name only . IMHO  :o

That should get the police circling your block  on New Years for sure ! , real sure if you live near me cause they are on the look out around here for some reason??????  !!!!!! ;D  (see tracy kunze)

Welcome !
Gary

ETA Never mind ! The above post was written while I was typing . ;D

E-O-D,
Your project's looking good, you do fine work. Are those trunnion cradles made of aluminum, or steel?

There steel I'm a purity good welder but welding aluminum to steel would be a neat trick. I think you can explosively weld the two together. But I'm not sure of what would be left. ;D

Eyes Of Death,
I thought that you might attach them to the cheeks with bolts to give more of an impression of the originals.

Dan,

The picture is huge 4.1 megs, you system probably timed out before it fully down loaded.  Had the same problem when I was in SA with large downloads.
