i got one for you...how i got into black gospel.

i born and raised in the methodist church mandantory attendence evry service. i remember (as a kid) being bored stiff listening to the on going monolog of of our old preacher. my grandma or mother pinching me when i was talking to my other cousins or laughing out loud at a joke they wispered. then the certain whippin when i got home with a limb stripped off the willow tree. (God how i wished that old tree would die)

well it was beautiful saturday morning and i was riding my bike down the dusty street in the "QUARTERS" just two blocks from my house. I was passing the Negro Church and the place was rocking ..singing shouting beautifull soulful voice of an older woman drifted to the street. I stopped got offf my bike walked up to the window an started peeking in. For a white boy who had never seen mnor heard of such carryin on in a Church i just had to see what was happening.

After a few minutes the preacher stood up and stopped the choir walked ot the front door and asked me what i was doing. i told him and he said well boy don't stannd here come on in and see for yourself. (now this old preacher had known me and my family forever i just did not realize it at the time) well i went in and thoroughly enjoyed it people expressing their joy unabashed. beautifull voices without instruments to back and cover up bad vocals. soulful renditions of songs that we methodist sang in a much more reserved way. they kept me mesmerized with the beauty of it they kept me hanging on the words. in othere words they kept me attentive. then when the preacher gave his sermon with a tempo and fire that had me scared to death with his vivid descriptions of the hell that was certain to be our fate if we did not come to the Lord. I swear it was a life changing event for me.
well i went home and told my mother what i had done an my dady jump up drug me outside and dam near peeled all the hide offf my legs with a heafty willow switch. he told me never, but never do that again! i just could not figure it out as to what in the heck i had done wrong. Now many years later I know it was his fear of the retailation of the other white folks in town for that was before intergration and the dangers to whites that fraternized with blacks wass real at that time. a harsh lesson

My main listening choice is classic rock. Skynrd, ZZ Top, Eagles etc. Fun to play that stuff on my strat. I play country on my accoustic cause I don't have a voice for anything else. I played sax in band during highschool so we played alot of jazz, and big band swing, love that stuff.

Music like The Rain is Falling by ELO and White Bird by It's a Beautiful Day are what I like the most. After that rock and roll. No nose twanging bluegrass or rapp or hip hop.

Music is so easy to black market today with digital recording that artist can't make huge money unless they do concert tours. The day pressed records changed to tape began the end for the big money for record sales. eddiegjr

Southern Gospel, 50's and early 60's, Old tyme stuff that predates Bluegrass with clawhammer banjo, Bluegrass, and old country.

To me the stuff they call country today was rock n' roll when I was growing up. If I can't understand the words I don't want to listen to it.

With one exception I like it all.  Rap Crap, I can not stand that.  Don't really call it music, just talking to a tune.

I used to say I hated Country, and at the time I did.  It reminded me of some horrible times as a child.  But today it has sort of grown on me, especially since Sky has gotten into it.  He spent a summer working with a bunch of Plumbers and they all listened to country.  After a while he decided it was not bad.  So now Sky listens to Country a lot.

When I was a kid my Dad played mandolin with a Blue Grass group.  Mom and Dad were Opry fans from the word go.  Mom and Dad would drag me to the Opry almost every Friday and Saturday night.  Don't know if any of you were ever at the old Ryman Auditorium, but the seats were plain old wooden church type seats.  No cushions, just hard wood.

Now here I was a little five year old kid, and after 8PM all I wanted to do was go to sleep.  If I became fussy Mama would slap me silly, and tell me to shut up.  I would eventually fall asleep on the benches, from shear exhaustion.  Then when we got home I would usually get a beating for acting up.  This lasted up till I was about 14 years old.  I hated going to the Ryman, it was a miserable experience for me.  So I grew up hating Country music, because it reminded me of that portion of my life.

As lionhunter can verify, being a kid around our Mother was not an enjoyable experience.

My favorites are Tchaikovsky, Roy Orbison, Cher, Donna Summers, Michael Jackson, 5th Demision, George Jones, Commodores, Johnny Cash, Boots Randolph, Red Foley, and Tennessee Ernie Ford.  Oh there's lots of others but those are my favorites.  One of my favorite Movies is Disney's Fantasia.  I love the music in that movie.  I often put it in the Dvd player just to listen to the music when I am home alone.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' I like a lot of the old stuff. My Dad was a fiddler, and I do a version of Faded Love pretty close to Bob Wills. I mean hey, I'm from Texas (born and raised), Western Swing is IT!. I like Jimmie Rodgers, "Waitin for the Train", Blue Yodel # 1, ect.
I like the good ole "solid country", Country Blues, "Milk Cow" stuff like that, and a lot of the Southern Rock, (not all), and Southern Gospel.
I write a lot of Southern Gospel for Church, and a little "two steppin" music. Some folks are trying to get me to market some of it, and I may try.
Most of all I just like a great sounding acoustic guitar. That's how I do a lot of my Church music. Just me and a guitar.
A couple a weeks ago two of my music buddies drove 60 miles to my church to do ONE SONG with me. Just me on guitar, a key board, and a bass. Great music.
The Church wants us back to do 4 or 5 songs for the two morning services and a Sunday night concert and even offered to pay.
You may all go to hell, I will go to Texas. Davy Crockett

Got a favorite musical style?

I was born into a musical family in the south. We sang and played mostly country music, but also listened to everything from classical to pop.

Most of my brothers and sisters could sing harmony, so we liked to sing as a group.
Country music is my favorite, and I don't consider today's so called country music really country!

I think the music of our youth is the one that stays with us.

I worked in country radio back in the late 60's and 70's and had the pleasure of working for one of the country greats (Conway Twitty) His real name was Harold Jenkins. I worked as program director at one of the country stations he was part owner of in NW Arkansas. I even got to play some gigs with Conway when he was in town playing at one of the local clubs.

Sorry about rambling on, but this thread brought back fond memories to this old man. Back to the question! I guess country #1 but I like most genres of music, with some exceptions ....... Like Rap (TRASH) "JMHO"

Traditional Hymns from the '60s version of the Baptist Hymnal (even though I was raised Catholic)

Country ballads, the Georges, Merle, Randy Travis, etc

Contemporary Christian

'70s Rock (Boston, Led Zepplin, ZZ Top, Eagles, etc) from the days of youth and indescretion

Bluegrass, especially gospel

Jazz

Big Band

Everything else, except speed rock, hop hop, rap, etc.

This is pretty much ordered.

When I purchased this house in 2005 here in the Santa Clara Valley, it had a small (19x26) musical recording studio on the second floor that was added on the the back of the house. It was divided into 4 small rooms all with large glass windows so you could see into each. They were set up for recording differant tracks I suppose. One of them was a control room with all the electronics. The exterior and interior walls and floor are about 2 inches thicker than the rest of the house for added sound insulation. Part of the deal when we purchased it, was they had to convert that space to a single space room which we now use as a rec room. The family that lived in this house since it was built was in the music business. They were a Gospel group that traveled the world for church work, missionaries and to army bases. One of the members of the The Doobie brothers grew up down the block from here and the band recorded a few tracks for their albums in this studio. For some reason, there are alot of musical peopel that live in our nieghborhood. All our neighbors sing and play instruments. Our yard parties around here are pretty interesting. Good music, country , gospel, older easy rock stuff. We have a great time.

Lately I've been into the old Motown stuff.  I also listen to jazz, having develpoed an appreciation for it from years of playing the saxophone.  Most country music I really don't care for.  I used to like classic rock, but I got weary of hearing the some tired tunes year after year.  I like blues, and older funk.  Rap, or hip-hop I find to be truly horrendous.  It really depends on my mood.
