5.7x28 Necked Down to a .17 or .20 Cal?
« on: January 04, 2010, 03:44:41 PM »
Has anybody tried to neck down the 5.7x28 down to either a .17 or .20 caliber?  I think this would be a terrific little caliber for small game, and possibly even coyote and fox (depending on the ballistics, of course).

If anybody has tried it, what kind of velocity are you getting?  Also, is there someone who can re-barrel a Five-seveN Pistol to either a .17 or .20?  Are there any other semi-auto pistols that can fire this round?

Jason:  that's quite a idea but I don't think anyone has gotten around to that sort of a thing yet.  It might happen though.  It seems as though Americans have a tendency to wildcat any cartridge that comes out, so if we just wait I'm certain we will hear of or see one.

I'm certain you could probably get 'screamin' velocities, for a pistol cartridge, by necking it down a 5.7 to 17 or 20 caliber and I'm certain it would probably shoot accurately too and then what you would have, by your own description, is a little caliber for small game.  I think I'll wait until one of the new Kel-Tec 22 Magnums hit the shelves though to purchase something more space age than my 1911...

As to someone who could rebarrel - actually, cut you a new barrel that you could install yourself - check out the Graybeard sponsor list, we have more than one barrel maker and I would suggest checking with them first to see if they could/would maek a different caliber barrel for the five-seven pistol.

I think the Chinese (Red, Commie types) also make a pistol in a 5.7 caliber but I seriously doubt we will ever see one here for a loooong time.  jmtcw.

The 5.7  has a similar case size and capacity to the 22 hornet, which has been necked down to 17 and 20 quite successfully.  You could expect similar balistics to a 17 Ackley Hornet, but without rim related feeding issues.

The only guns I'm aware of in the 5.7x28 are the FN pistol and PDW, and the AR uppers that are available.  I think that you would really have a hot varnint rifle if you built a bolt action in a 5.7 based wildcat.  For that matter, a Contender or Encore would be a great starting point.  Any of the barrel makers could help you, and custom loading dies are available for much less than I had thought before I looked into it.

It's bound to be done.  Might as well be the first and be the guy the new round is named for.

Not sure on a semi auto pistol, but in contenders and bolt actions, the guys at saubier.com have been doing it.

Never heard of sabier before, but I  just looked at it now.  Great sight for the small bore stuff.
