Is an 18" 45-70 barrell practical in a handi rifle?

Short barrels are very "Handi" according to everyone that has em.  ;)

Magnum research makes a revolver in this caliber, so barrels even shorter have been done.  Probably be a great gun for heavy brush or as a truck gun.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

I knocked one off to 16.5" with a hack saw and stone.  That was very handy would have made a perfect tree stand rifle.  I was still able to get 1910fps with a 325gr hard cast.....seems practical to me.

Thanks for the help.  I am thinking of using this in the jeep when offroad here in central/northern Az.  Currently I have a breach loading 20 guage I rebuilt to 18" barrell and 34" overall, but I would like a little more for an elk close in, 100 yds and under.  Drove my brother in law crazy by dropping ladyelk with one shot out of a 308 handi last season.  I need something to convince him to use something beside a .270 remigton bolt.  I am driving him crazy using a winchester trapper in .357 on hog down in Texas.  Three shots, three hogs, it took him two to get just one.

I have both the Magnum Research BFR and a TC Contender in 45/70. Your 18" barrel will do fine and in fact, dropping to 16" won't hurt you much if you adjust your powder. (A little faster)

If you do it yourself, you can make a good crown using a carriage bolt and valve grinding compound in an electric drill.
