The advantage the 45-120 using smokeless powder over the 45-70 is the same velocities can be achieved at much lower pressures, ~30-40kpsi for the 120 vs ~50kpsi for modern rifle 45-70 loads. You can see 45-120 Nitro Express velocities at AmmoGuide, data is from 22" thru 32" barrels, Hodgdon 45-120 data is done in a 24" barrel.

That depends on what you expect from it.

I'd like to see it in a longer barrel, if only for aesthetics...

Coolness and wow factor is near max.

Practicality closer to kill.

If more power is on your list, 45/90 W/smokeless powder will get you to the limits of what you can or would likely want to do.

You won't get more range with less recoil without increasing the weight of the rifle itself, play with the calculator.  ;)

ouch... im on a limited budget...

I could do it, but I'd have to devote myself to 1 or 2 calibers...
