Deep Throat
« on: December 20, 2009, 04:56:21 AM »
Stopped at Cabela's yesterday to do my CHRISTmas shopping for my wife uh.ummmm, picked up a Hor. O.A.L. gauge. Got home and checked my savage var. rifles to see how close i was with useing the old method of a blacked bullet in an fired case and chambering it. Was only about .005 off. So then I decided I would check my two handi's in 223. Used the longest bullet I had [69gr SMK BTHP] Inserted bullet and case, pushed it into the lands, pulled it out went to put bullet back in to measure and there wasn't enough room left in the case to hold the bullet. O.A.L. to lands was 2.472, my Savage is 2.352. I load my savage at 2.335  and 26grs Varget with this bullet. Is the long throat normal for these rifles? If I use the same ammo in each that's .135 jump to lands. Does the saying "BB in a box car" fit here? I'm no expert but that seems a little extreme. What do you guys think?      by the way both handi's measure almost the same.  thanks Dave

If it shoots okay I'd find something else to worry about.
I'm sure someone else will chime in with better info though.

That's the problem, it doesn't shoot good.

Long throats is par for the course, specially with the 223, use the search, you'll get 4 pages of threads on that topic, just load to data recommended spec and read the Handi Basics 101 and the accurizing tips, it's probably not a problem with the loads, just not knowing how to care for and shoot the Handi.  ;)

Is a deep throat a tall throat if the barrel is pointing up?  Larry

My 1 in 9 22" heavy 223 has a very long throat and is the tightest grouping gun I have ever seen.
Touching holes with it's favorite up to 1 1/2" groups with cheap FMJs 100yds.

I usually seat loads for it to just use the whole neck.

The Army marksmanship unit that often win high power national matches have their AR's throated to touch the lands on a 80 grain SMK with the bullet quite a ways out of the case,"real long" , and they seem to do "OK", when seated to magazine length,"huge jump". When I was working up a slow fire load for the 75grain bthp Hornady for slow fire, I move them out to touch the lands and gained very very little, so I went back to the same load for rapid fire. Moving the bullet out will not always make them shoot better. Also the way yours is, might be ideal for the 75 grain A-Max for long range varmints.

I was dissapointed to discover the same thing with mine but after shooting some hand loads and getting a 5 shot group you can cover with a dime at 100 yds id do think i can live with it. Defies everything i thought i knew but it works.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten
