« on: March 20, 2010, 10:08:31 AM »
Wow!!
My Family just surprised me with a brand spankin new model 700 varmint 17 fireball. !! 26" 820 barrel synthetic stock adjustable tirgger........ did I say WOW? Double front stud for 2 bipods, matt finish. (just kiddng about 2 bipods but it does have 2 studs). My dad got new fireball brass and 20gr vmax bullets for me too. I am excited. They said it was an early birthday present. ( mine is in July).  I am not used to stuff like this and I'm liking it. Look out woodchucks and crows.

Congrats - That will do just fine for any thing from chipmunks to coyotes. I am partial to .224 guns, but a 17 Fireball is tempting ;)

Low recoil to spot your own hit, plus there is the fact that Remington has enough brass on the market to keep the round from going obsolete too quickly.

The factory plastic stocks are crappy at best.  If you get a chance, upgrade as soon as you can.  The trigger can be brought down to a pretty decent level in the matter of a few minutes.

I'm sure you will like it.  Good luck!

My nephew has had the regular sps  fireball and we have been having a blast with that. His furthest hit so far was 318 I think. I watched him put 6 crows down that thought they were safe distance from my calling. At 200 yards they were not. They just fell one at atime. He has been reloading near max loads of 10x with 20gr v-max. I hope my groups are as good as his. Dime size at 100. With my adjustable trigger I know the trigger factor won't be an issue. Now I have to find the load that works. I already have the 20gr v-max and am thinking of buying the varmint nightmares. They don't shoot as good at alll in my 204 but maybe will in this.
Guess what I'll be doing for a while???   :-)

Mine is a Model Seven Predator. I got it right after they first started making them and at that time ammo and components were hard to come by but I found a good deal on factory ammo and so far am still shooting it. The factory stuff is easily half inch shooter in mine.

Anything within 300 yards even if only a head of a prairie dog or less is showing is dead. Beyond that wind drift becomes an issue with those light little bullets but with calm conditions it's suitable for critters like PDs out beyond 400 yards. Now finding calm conditions and PDs both at the same time and same day seems impossible so the SPS Varmint .22-250 gets the nod under those conditions.
