45/410
« on: December 21, 2009, 03:36:26 PM »
I have a chance to buy a Contender with a 45/410 10" barrel, it has an internal choke and a choke wrench. I've read that 45 Cot ammunition shoots poorly because of long freebore and 410 shotshells are difficult to hit anything with. So tell me, is this a barrel that has little value, if so why does TC manufacture it. Maybe I don't understand all the different uses for a barrel like this. I would appreciate any opinions.

I don't think the 45/410 is still being produced by T/C. The rumor I read is that the feds ask T/C to drop it. This used to be called a 'snake gun'. Once you get a Contender you can get any barrel you want, no FFL required.

If you can get this barrel to group well, you are standing too close to the target.

They made this barrel a few different ways. Some with only a vent rib barrel with a bead front sight. Others like the 10" I have had adjustable back sights and blade front sights. The one that I have has the internal choke. I have never shot any 410 shot shells in it but I have shot the 45 LC with some hefty loaded 250 gr Hornady XTP bullets and at 50 yards it will cut bullet holes.

The 45/410 is still very much alive and well...and, available from TC.  Over the years it has been one of TC's most popular barrels.  It was disscontinued for several years from the late 60's to mid 70's because of questions of it's legallity by the Beareau of ATF.  During this period the "Hot Shot" barrels in .357, 44 and 45Colt were produced until the 45/410 was again made available in 1978(I think).
Opinions vary from worthless to best barrel ever.

I have a stainless super 14 vent rib enternal chore and it works good with 410 and fun to shoot. I had a 10 in blue vent rib and with 45 colt could not hit with it have not tried the 45 in the 14 so dont know. I did shoot some skeet with mine have to be quick as they get out of range quick :) It is a fun barrel to play with.

Ahh..ok. I've never shot 45's out of the bbl..just the 410's. Much rather use my 30/30 or 45/70 bbls for deer..or my RRH 44 mag on occaision..
