New mossberg 500 pump 410
« on: October 27, 2009, 01:46:27 PM »
Stopped at a local Wally's today looking for a single 410 or 20ga, no luck but they had a Mossy 500 410 vent rib chk wood stock in
the rack. Nice little gun, asked the price and was quoted $217, thought this was rather cheap but not sure so passed at the time, after
getting home checked a couple on line dealers and called a local Dicks. All other places quoted around $260. Called back Wally's to
confirm and was told same price. It sounds good, what do you think/ Should I go back and jump on it? Maybe grandson will get more then he expected.   Fred

I bought one for my daughter 6 years ago. She was to small to handle a 20. She still loves that gun. Had it out Monday shooting up an old satellite dish  ;) Have had no problems at all out of it. I carry it on occasion for squirrel. Dare I say it? I have a picture posted in youth hunt section of her with a 10 point buck taken at 15 yards. Yes she knows her limitations. She has taken several does as well.

That's a good price. Several years ago at a Wally world I bought a Mossberg 500 20ga. and paid $220.00 plus tax.  Last weekend at a gun show in Springfield,Mo. I saw several used Mossberg .410's for sale--the asking price was around the $200.00 to $235.00 range. I believe that at the Wally world near me here in Mo. the asking price is around $230.00--so go get it. If I wanted another shotgun I don't believe that I would pass it up.

For the life of me though--I don't see why the price of .410 shells is so high. You pay as much for them as you do for .12 ga. shells. Best reason to load .410's.

Cybin,
I'm not real sure where you are, but around here, I could buy 2-3 boxes of 12 or 20 ga gameloads for the price of 1 box of 410s.

Definitely one to reload!

id buy it if yu was wanting a 410 fer sure. used ones are higher than that.410s are a lot of fun but ill agree the shells are way too high. keeps me from owning one for sure.yu might find a bolt action 410 in a pawnshop or sumpin for around a 100
$ if yu look around but that bout yur only other choice.

I'd pass, and it has nothing to do with my thoughts on Mossbergs.  The 410 is frustratingly small for beginning shooters.  If you are dealing with a boy old enough to shoot I, most of the time you are far better off skipping straight to a 20.  If recoil is an issue with a 2 3/4" 20 then look for an auto or start working on a recoil pad.

duk has a point about the 20, you'll make up for the difference in cost on the first couple boxes of shells and the 20 is a lot more versatile. Stay away from the single shot though, the recoil is still stout for a kid.

go with a .20 guage if you can..you will be happier in the end. a .410 takes time to master and still its not quite enough. a good .20 will do almost all a standard .12 will and be lighter to carry and easier on the kick. git one with the screw in chokes if at all possible and you will be set for many enjoyable years.

nevertheless a .410 is a lot of fun and definately easy on the shooter but if a youg one will be using it remember they will be big enough for a light loaded .20 before you can bat an eye.n
