I was supposed to go out for the fall season this last week but plumbing problems and my wife's health prevented that. My hunting buddy made the trip but only saw one in our usual haunt. He reported that he saw very little sign also.
That didn't keep me from seeing turkeys however. I live in an area surrounded by woods and farmers fields and so we see flocks from time to time. In the nearby and even much more heavily populated areas there are a lot of deer that have adapted to life in suburbia. I always thought that turkeys wouldn't do that, that they needed the open areas and woods. The other day though I was driving to a hardware store in an area that has had a construction boom. I passed an old house and saw a bunch of chickens running up in the front yard. I thought that that was strange since the house was sandwiched between two others but then on the heels of the chickens I saw at least 3 turkeys. Not the domestic type either. Maybe someone bought them and raised them, maybe not, but that was strange to see.
