A friend of mine got a chance to shoot a free ranging bison that wandered onto his cattle ranch here in northern Wyoming a few years back.  He used a .270 Win.  Took two shots at about 150 yds. no big deal.  If it were me I'd have used something with a bit heavier bullet though, in a handi I'd say 30-06 or 45-70 with whatever load you normally shoot.

Sourdough, Are you from Kodiak? I was on Kodiak Island this fall(vacation) and damn near drove off the road when I saw a herd of Buffs out by the missile launch.

ok, i have a update. with Tim's guidance, here is my solution to the quest for a humane taking of a bison.
 these are Cast Performance bullets 405 grain bullets, sitting on 50 grains of Varget
i feel confident that i can take a 1000 lbs. bison, one shot humane quick kill with these.

This is almost identical to my 45-70 load.  Let us know how it does on the big beasts!
