I'll take the blame for suggesting Dee and Jamayton going with Doesniper.
But if it gets GBO members together to go hunting or shooting, how is that a bad thing?

Graybeard, I don't know, I see a logical progression from: question on hog hunting advice to suggestion of taking Dee/jmayton with said questioner to ensure a successful hunt to planning of said hunt

Seriously, you're right, we strayed and I apologize.

As for AR's (.223) and hogs, I think they only work at their best when you do reload. FMJ seem to punch right through and varmint bullets get almost no penetration, unless you place them in the ear. Federal loads the 60gr Partition in one of their .223 loads. Those would work fine. I run 55gr Sierra GameKings in mine and they are astoundingly good.

So all that to say, back to Doesniper, if you don't have the right bullet, the AR would be less than optimal. Though Monarch makes a 55gr softpoint load, but I don't know how it performs on hogs. I'll try some and let you know.

I hunt about 2 hours southeast of Dallas and it is thick brush river bottom (part of the river mostly lately). I normally hunt with 30-06 or 7mm-08. Of your choices I would go with the 30-30 in that area. Some of the land around there is agricultural so you will want to ask before going about the type of terrain you will be hunting.

Be very quiet, stay down wind, and you don't really need camo. They have bad eye sight, but great hearing and sence of smell.

The wind is your worst enemy when hog hunting.

Also during day light they have decent visability.

Now the real question is how hard have they been hunted? If not hard then you should be able to easily get close. If they have been hunted hard then you will have very skittish hogs and you should use everything (camo, scent blocker etc.) available.

I love the wind. It takes away their hearing and if you approach down wind, they only have their eyesight to rely on which really isn't better than ours. But if the wind is out of the wrong direction, then you definitely have issues.

I have taken hog with both rifle and and knife method and prefer the knife method better but i like to get the old adrenalin pumping...( check out the story where i took a deer with a knife under the deer hunting category , then the "unbelievable hunting stories" section, there is a pic to).
i also took 2 hogs with 1 shot with a .270 awsome shot went right through them both at 65 yrds. below is the 350 lb monster i took with my Marine Corps. bayonet....

If on foot carry a hand gun worth it's salt. A friend of mine hit a 150+ Hog with a 223 and it was on him before he could say S^%T. I got in a luck shot with my 45-70 on it's second pass. My friend traded his 223 barrel in for a 308 on his G2 for his next hunt and I got a free meal out of it.
