I had a Ruger range day today.
« on: February 15, 2012, 06:25:15 PM »
I took my three Black Hawks out to my range today. Most of my groups were just barely under or over the 2.5" mark for five shots at 25 yards.

Using 9.0 grains of Unique under the Sierra 210 JHC the group was 1.8" so was my best five shot groups of the day. That was with my 5.5" Bisley flat top 44 special.

My next two groups behind that were 2.0" and 2.1". The better of those two was shot with my BH 45 Colt and the other was shot with my BH Flat top 45 Colt. All three guns have 5.5" barrels.

I had three additional groups that if I toss the widest shot out were: 1.35", 1.35" and 1.4". Two of those were with my newest the flat top 45 and the other was with my Bisley 44 special using the Skeeter Skelton load.

All were not so great sadly. I had one that was 5.1" hey I have no explaination for that one. Maybe I got some sweat in my shooting eye.  :o There was one at 4.4" also, yeah I think I had sweat in my eye then too.  ;D

Of the 12 five shot groups today another was 3.1" but 9 of the 12 were under 2.5" and for my old shaky hands and poor eyes that's about as good as I can do. I'd bet a fellow who can shoot like I used to be able to could cut those groups in half easily with these three guns. Unlike most of the Ruger guns I've owned these are real shooters.

Sounds like a good day over all.

It does seem that while it was a nice day that it must have got hotter in Alabama than it did here in Georgia, what with all that sweatin' going on.  ;)

"Ruger Range Day"...now, that would be a Federal Holiday I could get behind!

those groups were no doubt opening up from exposing your eyes to the glare of those fancy smanchy jacketed bullets flying through the air. 8)

Graybeard...

Not to shabby for a bunch of wheel-guns.  Appears to me you still have a steady hand and a somewhat sharp eye.  Certainly good enough for whistle pigs at 30 yards.   :)

Lloyd I only fired a total of 5 jacketed bullet the rest were all cast bullets. Sierra sent them to me so I need to work them into some reviews. I'm working on a detailed review of these three Ruger guns plus my 9.5" Single Six customized by Magnaport.

Temp while shooting was around 66-67 I think. A t-shirt and jeans were all that was needed. Hey ya gotta have an excuse of some sort when ya shoot a 4.4" and a 5.1" group at 25 yards in the same day. Sweat in the eyes seemed as good as any. I sure have no better excuse for blowing those two groups.

Here is a picture I took of the three guns I was using.

Graybeard my excuse is that all of my handguns seem to have a loose nut behind the trigger. Problem is it is fact not excuse. I'd love to shoot some of those 2 inch groups.

Oh, and that Bisley flattop is sweet lookin'

All the critters I hunt are over 5" round. So I say you are ready ;) . Sounds like good shooting to me. Nice looking guns.

Do you write your reviews for public consumption or is it feedback for the manufacture?

The reviews will be posted here at GBO.

We used to have a section off the home page for product reviews but I can't post to it anymore. My older reviews are still posted there. Now I post them to the forums. I usually post them to the Product Discussion Forum and to one or two of the Discussion forums most appropriate to the items I am testing.

In this case since the reviews will be about these three Rugers plus my 9.5" Single Six as well they will be posted to the Single Action and Ruger Handguns forums in addition to the Product General Discussion Forum. The flat top .45 LC is a convertible model with .45acp cylinder as well. I might get around to shooting that cylinder some later and report on it as well.

At least parts of them will be on the Cast Bullet discussion forum as one of the things being reviewed are cast bullets from several commercial casters. I also have bullets provided by Hornady, Nosler, Sierra and Barnes which I'll weave into these reviews or separate ones depending on just what guns I use.

I have three lever action M92s from Rossi that I will eventually get around to post reivews of as well. They are chambered to .357 Magnum, .44 Magnum and .45 Colt.

Well Mr. Graybeard sounds to me like you're shootin is just fine.  Of course I don't know how good you used to shoot but what you're doin now will match pretty much anything I can do and my hands don't shake and my eyes aren't THAT bad. (I do wear bifocals though and that front sight is a little hard to pick up) Your "worst" group is about my "normal". Maybe we just don't shoot enough....I always use the old "dust on my peep sight" excuse but do like the "sweat in my shootin eye" one. Also you might try the Rooster Cogburn, "Da## chinaman's runnin those cheap shells on me again".....  Nice outfits by the way...

Sounds like a great day.  I love shooting my Blackhawks.
