Redfield Scope Base For Contender
« on: January 27, 2010, 09:36:36 AM »
I recently mounted a Redfield 4 hole dual dove tail base on a Custom Bullberry barrel. When I went to close the action it wouldn't lock up. The back of the base extended over the frame and prevented lockup. Once I took the base off the barrel locked up perfect. Has anyone ever had this happen before? If so what did you do to remedy it.

Thanks

You don't have it on backwards, do you?

If not, how much does it overhang by?

Fine wheel bench grinder, file or milling machine......sounds like a small relief under the rear end of that mount would do the trick.

Not trying to be a smart @ss, but it sounds like you mounted the base backwards on the barrel. Don't laugh, I've done it myself once. It will screw on either way. The "notch" has to go to the breach, and towards the frame. I bet if you swap the base around, all will be normal.

I have had that happen also. I just filed the bottom edge to get the needed clearance and put a little cold blue on it.

I believe it is mounted correctly. When it is mounted the way I have it the base hangs over about 1/4 inch. When I turn it around the the other way the back of the base is almost an inch from the back of the barrel. With it this way I cannot get proper eye relief. I had thought about a file but was afraid it would lead to the base rusting. Didn't think about cold blueing it.

Thanks for the input

I've had several of the old Redfield 3-ring bases over the years and the rear of the base extends over the breech by a good 1/4" or more but has an obvious notch affording plenty of clearance over the frame.  ???

The firsrt Redfield base I ever mounted did the same thing.  Just put it in a vise and file about a one  sixteenth notch in the portion that protrudes over the frame and you will be good to go.

Yep, I've put them on backwards also...

I have 1/2 dozen of the 3-ring Redfield mounts and never had problems unless I caused them...

Good-luck...
