28 ga single projectiles

I am trying to build a 28 ga. "slug" gun . I am starting with a modified smoothbore. I can use a 28 ga. BPI plastic wad pushing a .504" ball. That setup uses a rolled crimp.  The inside dimension of the 28 ga. hull would take a .53" ball but it may be limited to the smaller size ball because of the crimp .Would a .53 ball pushed by the original wad work with a star crimp? Why must [?] a saboted projectile be fired thru a rifled barrel?  Ken

Ken,to answer your second question we will take for granted that you do not mean a saboted round ball. A normal saboted projectile is longer than it is wide and must have some kind of spin put on it to stabilize it in flight. A rifled barrel will do this, a smooth bore will not.

Fred, I'm aiming for a ball-et projectile ,a skirted roundball that I attach some sort of stabilizing "tail' onto that would act like fletching on an arrow .   Ken

He has done a series of the from hell cartridges . He is definably not recoil sensitive
sounds like a .550 mould will get you in the 28 ga slug business
