New 96/22M Good or Not?
« on: August 14, 2009, 09:43:04 AM »
I've been looking at 22 mags lately and have seen a couple of new 96/22M's that I like the looks of. However, the part I couldn't seem to get past was the poly/plastic lever and action housing. Not knowing much about Rugers, but I always thought they were built well, I was surprised by this. I'm not saying it's not durable just wondered if anyone had any experience with them?
Thanks,

I'm curious about this myself. I also noticed Ruger dropped the LR version.

I think they dropped all the lever actions actually.

I see now. What were the problems with them?

Mostly ya couldn't get them to hit a bull in the butt. If you were inside a barn with the door closed and lucky ya "might" get it to hit a wall. Folks I've known that had them couldn't wait to get rid of them. Ruger finally got the message but instead of fixing it just stopped making them.

Thanks guys, kept me from crapping some money down a rathole on that one. I looked at their catalog online and didn't see them so I wondered what was up.

Mine had a spongy trigger and grouped like a shotgun with all brands of ammo. I replaced it with a Savage 20g 22mag combo circa 1965.
Pretty beat up but it produces raggety hole groups at 50 yards with a couple of loads, CCI and Stirling.

I got one of these in 22 WMR about 6 years ago; I really like it! The only negative thing about it was that darned creeping, 7.5# trigger. I've got the sear stoned down to 4.5 now but I think that I'll do bit more work on it to aliminate more creap. I've also ground out the inside of the barrel band with a Dremel tool so that it doesn't touch the barrel and free floated the barrel.
These rifles are made to be hunting firearms, not match rifles. Because I'm still gradually working on the trigger I'm still fooling around with types of ammo but I've been able to shoot 5 shot, 0.75 inch goups @ 75 yards; not bad for a hunting carbine.
I think a lot of people didn't like these guns because the weren't the traditional styled lever gun, with exposed hammer and tube magazine. The first thing that attracted me to this gun was that the receiver and bolt were designed after my favorite deer rifle, the Savage 99.
If I could aford it, and had an opportunity, I'd get one of these in 22 LR.

Wondering if a VQ 10/22 hammer would fit in these and fix up a lot of the trigger problems?

I don't think that the 10/22 trigger work is compatible with the 96.
