44 mag bore size
« on: December 25, 2009, 08:57:14 PM »
Just got a new Handi in 44 mag for Christmas from Gander Mountain. From searching this forum I have found several post on the over size bores on the 44 mag and the problems with grouping. My ? has H&R cured this problem. I am not a hand loader so loading up over sized bullets is not an option. This is one fine forum. I haven't been able to quit reading it. Thanks

The problemed oversize barrels were in the early years. The newer ones are pretty much good bores ;)

If you thumb thru the FAQ, I believed it is covered. Also do a search on it here, and you will find several post on the subject. They are to fun not to have one :)

Welcome aboard, you will find GBO has great people and can get you answers to all your questions.

Look through the FAQ section. 44 Mag barrels produced in 2007 and later have smaller bores. So if the serial number prefix is HX, NX, NY, HY, CBA, CAC or later then you have a 44 with the proper sized bore. Again, look in the FAQ section for a clarification. I have an HX and it shoots .429 - .430  factory loaded bullets just fine. Read the FAQ, even if you have no problems, it is a good read and gives you a lot of insight on the Handi rifle. Good Luck and Good Shooting

My older 44mag. shoots good enough to bust clay birds at 100 yds.
I guess they don't shoot that bad. ;)

That's great mine is an HX also. I order a scope base and hammer spur from TGSC last night. I have a 3X9X40 Bushnell Elite that I think I will put on this neat little rifle. Then I'm going to see what factory ammo that it likes.I have heard good thing about the Hornady Leverloutions, but could very well go broke using them. I'm going to use this for firearms deer season in Indiana next year and give my old smoke pole a break. Thank for the info

I would be happy with that. Did it take you long to find a load to be able to do this?? When I was searching the FAQ sticky on these guns I seen where several guys had just about gave up on their 44 mag guns before they found a load that their gun liked.

To be honest I've had good luck with everything I've put through it. I don't know if I just got lucky or what but I just haven't experienced the poor accuracy that some people speak of. :-\
It's just a good shooting rifle plain and simple.
