shell holder numbers?
« on: December 24, 2009, 06:12:44 PM »
are the numbers used to identify the shellholders universal between all brands? i have a set of lee shell holders but have always used rcbs and lee dies but have now got a set of hornady dies for the 7mm saum and it says to use the #5 shell holder and my list for the shellholders does'nt list the 7mm saum. am i making any sense of this? all info is appreciated.

NO, not even close. Any similarity is purely coincidental and for sure not done on purpose.

As Bill stated, NO they are not the same set of numbers. Each manufacturer has there own set of shell holders numbers.

For many years all I had was the lyman shell holders, then I bagan buying RCBS dies and found that the numbers did not jive. I picked up a RCBS shell holder rack and began to fill it. Now its far easier to get the shell holder that I need with out fishing around in a small box full of loose shell holders.

See if this helps...

The Lyman Reloading Manuals have a Shellholder Chart with all the Lyman, Hornady, RCBS and Redding Shellholders and corresponding Rifle Cartridges. Thw 7mm Rem. SAUM in included in the 48th and 49th Editions.

Bill

EDIT: 7mm Rem. SAUM Shellholders (According to the Lyman Manual)
         Lyman - #13
         Hornady - # 5
         RCBS - #38
         Redding - # 6

The LEE # 5 Shellholder is designated for the 7mm Rem. SAUM (from another source)

Redding puts a list on the back of their package so you can cross match numbers. gypsyman
