Unless the barrel is refitted to the frame, it can't become an Ackley chamber that is capable of shooting factory 280 ammo, but you can have it rechambered and used fire formed handloads only in it, you'll gain about 100fps or a little more, see handloading for an improved chamber in the FAQs.

I've been thinking of doing the very same thing to my Handi.  So how does one set back the barrel to properly headspace the AI chamber?  When facing off the barrel to do the set back, how does one move the ejector/extractor as well?  I can see where a guy could ream out the 7-08 barrel to a .280 AI, but what if a guy wants a .30-30 AI or .22 K-Hornet?

30-30AI is a simple hand rechamber, just be careful not to cut the chamber too deep, or there will be no support for the shoulder and you'll get split shoulders on fire formed brass, even tho it head spaces on the rim, the shoulder still needs support for the thin brass.

The ejector/extractor slot has enough free space to work after refacing the barrel to effectively set the barrel back, I did a .270 Win barrel that way, it works fine, did the rechamber by hand also, a second hand barrel that won't fit due to the underlug being a bit too long would be an ideal candidate for an Ackley rechamber when fitted to another chamber.
