I know that a 15" barrel will have less velocity than a 24", but don't know how much less. Will factory ammo expand reliably at pistol velocities? I shot a doe with mine last season but it was only about 30 yards. It worked great. Would it still expand at longer ranges (100-200 yards)? What would the max range be for that round be in the pistol, assuming you had a good rest and could shoot well?

Sorry sometimes I forget about all the other .308's. I have a .308 Winchester. I have been using the 150gr. Winchester Power Points, because they have been shooting very well. I have not started reloading for this round yet.

Found a couple good articles where they started with a standard barrel then started cutting it off and measuring velocity and accuracy with both the 300 Win Mag and a 223 if I remember correctly. Posted them here a while ago. If I can find them again I'll post again.

I shoot a 308 Win Encore 15" and shoot 125 and 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips for Deer. I have never had any problem with bullet performance with either. My favorite load is 51.5 grains of W748 under a 125 gr BT. :-D

it's range should be waaayyy out there with a good soft expanding bullet like a balistic tip. your ability,and the conditions at the time will be what limits the range. if you can't hold steady enough to center the cross hairs, let it walk. use any available, or pack a good rest in.

Phenomenal articles - Thanks! The 2nd link is broken, but if you go to the website listed and 'target' the Dec 2000 issue, you'll find the article in question.

I'm personally blown away by the .223 info, and how little velocity is lost (about 20%) in a barrel half the length of the original.

Thanks for the articles, they are good reading. I really would like to get a longer shot at a deer, but I won't complain about them coming right to me. I know that round is more capable than I am I was just curious. My hunting area doesn't provide many long shots but my stands do have solid rests anyhow.
