Insuring my Handi
« on: December 28, 2009, 08:39:47 AM »
Just got back from the Post Office.  Mailed my Handi 30-06 to myself in Texas.  Plan on hunting Hogs while there.  They asked about Insurance, so I thought the gun is worth about $200.00.  Was I right or is it worth more?  The scope I valued at $500.00.  That's what I paid for it last year.

Well,
I always go for replacement value as thats what I would do if something hppened to mine. So, 200 is too little, 300 is closer to real than add the cost for the scope, bases and rings!!

Now don't even get me started on getting them to actually pay for a claim...

Guess it is gone now, but all you had to do was put the receiver in a small flat rate box and send it off.  Every thing else can go in your suitcase in checked luggage without declairing a firearm.  Cost would be under $5.00.  Larry

I mailed the Handi since I don't want a long gun in my baggage, space and weight.  I'm going for three months and need the space for clothing.  I am taking a pistol in my bag anyway.  I am flying so the problem with Canada is a non-player.

What part of the Handi is considered the "gun" and needs to be shipped to an FFL? Am I missing something here?

The serial numbered frame, just like any other firearm, the action is the part that is accountable.

The receiver in this case It wears the serial number is considered the "gun".

There is some fancy wording in the actual BATF regs, but as it pertains here, its the receiver.

I am not mailing it through an FFL, don't need to.  I have mailed it to myself from myself.  No transfer of ownership or possession.  I used the US Postal Service.  I don't bother with UPS or FED-X, they really can screw things up.  Every time you check with them the rules have changed.

I do this two or three times a year, no problem.

I've gotten to be an expert at getting them to pay claims. They break  3 out of every 5 long rifle stocks that go over their conveyors.

First you put in the claim...then you start calling and really POing people ...going higher with each call. Really make them mad. They in turn take it out on the next lower person whom you have already called and PO'ed. If all else fails, call your congressman and ask him to initiate a Congressional inquiry (They do it gladly). That always gets results.

You can send a gun through USPS, yet you can't ship ammo through them? Very odd indeed.

It's not odd at all, firearms aren't classified as Class 1 explosives by the Department of Transportation, ammunition is.
