Leach, Texas Tech. Lubbock and other Egocentricity
« on: January 02, 2010, 02:06:37 PM »
Lubbock is a beautiful town full of fine people, however, as a TTU Alum and a native Texan, I have always been amazed at how the Lubbock establishment believes that West Texas is the center of the universe.  I'm sure that geographically isolated communities everywhere have similar views.

TTU old guards find it so hard to believe that anyone wouldn't jump at the opportunity to move to West Texas to coach, or anything else.

I've tracked what has happened over the past few days, and I have two comments for the TTU Chancellor: 1 Lubbock is 200 miles from nowhere. Its a great town, but hardly Miami. 2 If TTU thinks that a first line coach is going to give them a second glance, the university is just wrong.  We alums better get used to the return a 7 win seasons.

when I was in grad school in New Orleans one of the professors in my department moved to Texas Tech. I don't know if he got forced out or fed up or a little of both....his students had little choice but to go with him or start over, or take a masters.

they were all horrified by the prospect of moving to Lubbock.

myself, I thought it was cool.  I like being in the middle of nowhere.  I'd love to see a horny toad too.

Don't know about Johnny Winter but Buddy Holly and Mac Davis, are.

I have lived within 125 miles of Lubbock (not Lubbick like so many pronounce it now) all my life. Nice town for all us West Texas hicks. I would much rather live here than some place like the Metroplex or Houston but I understand about other people that make the big bucks.

Mike Leach is a big time coach. He put Tech on the national football map. I think the fans are really going to miss him next year when they drop into the bottom of the Big 12. I also think this deal was blown all out of proportion to get rid of him because Tech's administration wants a top notch coach for junior college wages. They have been unhappy since the contract  last year and this was an easy out for them. Anyone notice that two people involved that supported Leach have changed their statements in the last few days and another now supports Adam James and won't talk about it anymore. Think it had anything to do with their continued employment with Tech?

Leach isn't always nice. nor was Bear Bryant, or any other great coach, but the vast majority of their players would take a bullet for them.  I wasn't there during the incident, but after watching the Lubbock television news show how and where Mr. James was "locked" up, and why, he was placed in a training room and media room for his poor attitude.  He is, and has been, a cancerous tumor on the team.  He has a poor work ethic, a bad attitude, and a believes that, because Daddy wants it, that he should get preferential treatment and playing time.

Leach chose to discipline a spoiled kid.  Nothing Leach did could possibly harm boy Adam because of his concussion, but it might have taught him respect for authority, if he wasn't such a cry baby.

When we remove the ability of leaders to discipline their subordinates, we get, well, America ;)

Congrats to Ruffin, great guy, but TTU is in trouble regarding athletics.

I agree with you. Any coach has to be a disciplinarian to get results. First reports were James was locked in an equipment shed and an electrical closet. Turns out he wasn't locked in anywhere and was free to leave if he wanted to. The shed was large as a one car garage and had ice machines and was air conditioned. Seems he was in another building the next day and there was an electrical closet in the room but he was told not to go in it. Also said he was to be kept standing but there is also a report that he was laying in the floor in that shed eating ice. Of course this first report that he was locked in a small equipment shed and then it an electrical closet was first aired  on ESPN where his father, Craig James works.

It's a big mess of course. I really think Tech wanted him gone because of his salary and also to keep keep ESPN happy.

The basketball program isn't doing so great either since Bobby Knight packed it in. New Mexico beat them handily in the Pit last week. It's bad when you can't beat the Lobos.

I watched Ruffin interview after the game. He said he loves his boys and I believe him. I don't know if he had the same ability as Leach does. I do know Tech's defence wasn't much until he showed up.

I have been a Leach fan for a long time; I think is one of the finest at motivating and coaching.  That said, I think he just got too big for his britches, evidently he had a bone to pick with the James kid and acting accordingly.  He didn’t give Taylor Potts the same kind of treatment when he suffered a similar problem at the beginning of the season, did Leach find a new cure, or was this his way of getting back at the James family?

As for finding a coach for Texas Tech, I’m sure there is one who would like the small town of Lubbock, it a nice town, provides most everything one could ask for and doesn’t have the problems of “Big City, USA,”

There must be something attractive, Bobby Knight jumped on a contract there as Leach did.  I don’t think it is money that attracts them.

Sounds to me like he had a spoiled brat on his hands. Daddy works for ESPN and I can do as I please! He should have just kicked him off the team! Or maybe a swift kick in the rear!
