my old saturday night special
« on: January 09, 2010, 04:15:35 PM »
I have an RG 14 which I bought new in the early 70s  it will shoot stingers perfectly, but, will not shoot standard 22s due to the rim thickness being more in the stingers.  So, can a gunsmith put a spot weld or maybe a spot braze on the tip of the firing pin without ruining the temper of the metal?  I would like to get it shooting and use it for a snake gun with shot cartridges.
thx

Probably easier to make a whole new fireing pin or turn some metal off the stop sholder on the one you have.  With a small lathe it would be about a 10 minute job.  Larry

that sounds reasonable. also I was wondering about drilling out the lands and leaving about 1/2" of rifleing for better shot pattern. would that be legal?

You likely should ask BATFE that question. Based on prior experiences seen with the TC contender I would doubt they will like you're idea. Of course it will not help the patterns in any case. Any rifling left will spin the shot load and disburse the pattern. The TC folks got around the problem and the law by adding an appendage to the muzzle the was in effect a choke tube much like the old Cutts tubes with the exception that it too had rifling, said rifling was just straight.. Thus the shot charge went down the rifled barrel spinning and hit the final section of straight rifling and stopped spinning. It was also shoked a bit and then released. The feds still threatened TC and there was a lawsuit which a judge eventually thru out since the gun was a single shot and of little value to a criminal! The Judge a 45colt/410 pistol has a rifled bore.

I think I would consider just wrapping a piece of Scoch Bright pad around an old brush and then polishing out most of the rifleing so that there is enough left to see but not be too effective.  I have an O&U Derringer that has rifleing that cannot be more than about .0005 deep, but I can see it.  Larry
