Landowner. I suspect it is something in their diet that makes them so gross. We run three feeders year round with a mixture of corn, Anther Max and Mr. Buck. I use 55 gal drums, start with a fifty pound bag of corn, then alternate with Anther Max and Mr. Buck until full, each feeder is on a timer and runs for 10 seconds twice a day. After a day or two it starts to mix and throw a goodly portion of each. I won't say how much my feed bill runs each year for fear it may get back to the wife.....
In my part of the country we run long periods of drought, there are not a lot of natural foods for them with the exception of acorns, (I have seen them eat catus when the thorns are burned off.) I know they root under the cedars but are not sure if they are eating the roots or not, they do wipe out any dead animal usually before the buzzards find it. We have trapped a few and fed them out for two-three months to put on fat and get some of the wild out, they ate as good as any pork I have had. By the same token, I have also noticed that deer are not as tasty during periods of drought. I too have killed a few of them that I didn't eat; they were turned into delicious tamales though. I know from my experiences in the military that almost anything is editable, but all is not good.
