What's 444 Good for?

BattlerifleG3 - the Hornaday light magnum loads are nothing more than what reloaders have been rollin' for years.  The 265 gn Hornaday bullet is one of the best jacketed slugs for the 444 and as mentioned, was designed for that cartridge - other jacketed bullets were designed for pistol velocities.

As for use on dangerous game - what dangerous game are you talking about here??  For Boar, the 265 grainer will definately do the job.  I've used the Beartooth 330 grain cast slugs for big boar and large Elk and they just blow right through.  I hit the Boar (400 lb) just behind the ear at about 75 yds and the bullet blew through and out the right shoulder, flipping him over on his side.  The Elk was no contest.

If you are talking about Bear as dangerous game I would suggest two things - (1) Load up the 444 with heavy hardcast bullets, like the Beartooth Bullets, that will bust on through bone and not break apart and (2) decide on the weight of the bullet, 300, 330, 350, for the dangerous game you are likely to encounter and understand where to place the bullet.  Even the best bullet will have little effect on a dangerous animal if it isn't placed right.  HTH.  Mikey.

Hey Swage,
Let me jump in this conversation.  I , for one, am interested in exactly what you are talking about.   I recently had a 21" Contender bull barrel rechambered from 44mag to 444 Marlin.  I have been looking for a spitzer type bullet.  Weight isn't that critical, somehwere between 265 and 310gr would be ok.  Jacket thickness? I have no idea.  Something that would hold up at a starting velocity of around 2200fps.  I would want the highest B.C. possible, something over .300, and a boat-tail would be nice but not critical.  They might even be suitable to load in a 44mag or 445 Supermag Contender.  I had thought some of the polymer tip bullets loaded in sabots for muzzle loaders would work but they are all too big a diameter, either a true .440 or a .458.

Buckeye - the 300 grain Hornaday XTP gives me great accuracy from each of my 3 Winchester BBs but it is really a pistol bullet.  At 100 yds the bullet may perform properly but closer up it may be somewhat explosive and very destructive.  I have found that each of my BBs gives me exceptional accuracy with properly sized hardcast, gas-checked bullets (from Beartooth) and also find them to be significantly less expensive than the jacketed commercial brands.

Don't get me wrong here - Hornaday makes excellent products and their 265 gn bullet was especially designed for the 444, but the 300 grainer is a pistol bullet (I think, I think, I think).  Mikey.

I read and saw pictures of the 265gr. Hornaday bullet, tested(in a 444) with other .429 bullets ,in the test it preformed no better than the 240gr. Rem. bullet and not as well as the Speer 300gr. bullet, in penatration and expantion, thats why I'm going to try the 300 XTP, its legendary in 44 mag. ,I know a guy who uses the .358 XTP 158gr. in his 35 Rem. and has killed several Deer with this Combo, has nothing but praise with this combo.
He feels these bullets are tougher than what people think.

Hopefully I get to try'em in my 444 ,on a White Tail this coming season. http://home.earthlink.net/~hwsportsman/444Marlin.html
