357/44 Bain and Davis
« on: December 30, 2009, 03:43:35 PM »
Anyone here chanmbered a 357 barrel for 357/44 B&D?  Any advantages of the B&D over the 357 Maximum?  The 357/44 B&D was/is a 44 mag case necked down to 357.  I had 2 Blackhawks with cylinders reamed out to take the B&D but sold them and all associated reloading equipment when someone offered me a lot of money for it all.  Just wondered what the round would do out of a Handi.

Should be ballistic ally quite similar. One big advantage I see right away is the availability of brass. Maxi brass is getting more and more scarce. I read a post earlier today where someone had found some on-line...

I remember a couple threads about it, cant say for certain I remember anyone actually cutting a chamber...  Should make a nice addition to the handi family!!

That sounds pretty cool. The real question is how far could/should it be used for deer?  ;-).

I have a custom ultralight contour 18" contender carbine bbl in .357X.44,the whole rifle scoped with a 2-8 bushnell compact banner weighs just a smidge over 4 pounds! Although I haven't chronographed it, I did kill a deer with it this year. I was shooting a 158gr JSP bullet over a mid range load and dropped the little buck with one shot to the neck at 75yds, I think he would have been just as dead at 150, maybe 200.
Brass is much cheaper and easier to find than 357 max, thats about the biggest difference. I don't know why it wouldn't make a jim dandy little handi round, much more zip than the 357 mag.
