buckhammer slugs

Anyone shoot em? Looks like an inexpensive round...but are they "cheap"?

Hey Joe, I shoot the managed recoil 20ga. buckhammer's from my ush and they shoot with very good accuracy without pounding my shoulder. I paid a little over $6.oo a box. I do not think I'd have to much of a problem pulling a sixty yard shot on deer with this round. scout4<><

Hi Joe,

I've shot the 2 3/4" 12 gage Buckhammers the last 3 years.  Gun is a Beretta 303A with a cantilever hasting barrel and 3x9x40 Leupold shotgun/MZ scope.  Three comments:

1.  Will bruise your shoulder in a light gun like my 303.
2.  Consistently shoot sub 2-inch groups @ 100 yds, IN MY GUN.
3.  Destroy the vitals of a whitetail better than any other slug I have tried, but nothing close to what a good centerfire rifle can do.

This combination of ammo & Gun is good to about 125 yds.

My hunting partner has a H&R Ultra Slug Hunter 12 Ga with a Leupold VX 1 and he got the same accuracy as I do.  He stopped shooting Buckhammers because of the recoil.

I've used the Buckhammers in my H&R's since they came out
along with the Hasting Laser and they are both very similar . Last couple of yrs using the reduced recoil with very happy results my max yardage were I hunt is about 60 yards and they will kill any thing in that range. You may be able to dial it in and spend $15-20 on the sabots and shoot them 200yrds but why when you really only need 60-75 and there are several here that use them to 100 so for the money they are perfect for the H&R. Plus I would like to see those ammo companies eat some of the sabots that they are gouging guys for .No way they are worth 4+$ a pop. Kurt

i shoot nothing but buckhammers from my tracker II 12 gauge, they patterned nice at 50 and 100 yds with open sights and they have killed every deer that has been shot with them so i see no need to switch slugs, dont let the price fool you when they came out cabelas had them for $13 a box, now they have them for $7, which is very reasonable

  Those buckhammers shoot great out of my 12ga USH. I have some for my 20ga but haven't got around to shooting it yet. With the 12ga, I took a big Doe a few years ago at a range of about 90 yards and dropped her. The buckhammers work fine.....

Are the buckhammers sabots? I believe they can be fired from rifled slug barrels without causing excess leading.

Buckhammers (12 ga. anyway not sure about the 20 ga) are a full diameter lead slug attached to a plastic wad.  The lead and wad do not separate, at least the ones I have recovered at the range have not.  The lead of the slug does contact the rifling, however they do not foul my hasting's slug barrel.

Correct, they are the same design as a number of good slugs, Brenneke, light fields to name a few. Here is a pic of one I sacrificed.. (sorry its a cell phone pic.)

Comon misconseption, anyone can plainly see by my picture what they are.... Not that it truly matters, they work very well in a rifled barrel as well as a smooth bore. Calling them anyname matters little, the flippin' things work and work well.
