sharp pants

while skinning a buffalo(american bison) I realized i didn't have my stone to touch up the edge on the knife, looking down i saw i was wearing my Carhart dungrees and thought "what the heck". After just a few strokes the edge was honed back to a reasonable edge and in just another hour the buff was skinnned and ready to pack. as for useing your pants as a strop to hone your knives, All i can say is make sure you hold the blade the right way (the result of the wrong hold is slashed jeans   or a slashed leg  )and probably a pair of pants your missus won't allow back into the  house

 So, how long must one wear a pair of pants for them to collect enough dirt to become an abrasive?

well ya gut whupped with a strap-I KNOW THAT-an ya strop a razor. i'm jest guessin that sum palces ya could strap a razor on a razor strop. ya know we all speak tha same language but we'un sometimes don't use tha same language tha same. in many places in louisana they don't use water hoses they use pipe hoses. in texas, by god-well, er dependen on whar ya live tha same words are used differently. tank, pond, river, creek ect.
now ya noticed i left out tha boys in bama, tenn., virginny, miss., georgia as they, well ya know they do it different too.
culture do make a difference-lessen ya frum east texas, an well sum folks say we'un aint got no culture. i beg ta differ-well anyway we'un doan hold ta marryin 1st cousins-anyway, much.
now them boys in tha u.p. and maine an such they does it thay own way too.
godalmighty boys, sum of you folks is strange.

sharpening a knife
« Reply #8 on: December 05, 2003, 01:30:39 AM »
I was on the road for a couple of years and alwauy without my lansky sharpening set...so here's what I found that works:

The bottom of dinner plates/bowls, ceramic cups.  There is always one laying around and they work the best!

The edge of my rental car window.  That buffed edge works great!

A piece of typing paper is abrasive enough to put a REAL fine edge on your knife.

Good topic guys, Thanks!

:D Bob/FLA,
I learned that one (sharpening on a glass) when I was a child, but get this;  It was the neighborhood nice old lady, who was our surrogate grandmother!  She was cooking with an antique, bone-handled Bowie knife when she showed me how to touch it up on a Mason jar! That was a lady!
