Is the 450 marlin to much for whitetails

Since I made this post in 2005 I have shot a number of deer with my 450. I have come to know this gun like the back of my hand. When I fire it everyone hunting with me knows I shot, and I am very confident about where the bullet is going. It has become my favorite firearme and my 11 year old cannot wait until he can fire it. He has nicknamed it "Thumper" To those that give me a hard time about using it I tell them two things. 1. I would rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.   2. Your just jealous you cant handle it.

whats to handle, i shoot a 45/70 in a handi rifle from the bench or any where else
the 450 isn't that much more. why do people think that they can handle any more than anyone else? Some of you make me think you need an ego check, maybe you should go talk to your wife, she can tell you what you can handle

Congratulations on all your success with your 450. I didn't read where anyone gave you a hard time for using it, just that it was a lot of gun for a white tail deer, which was your original question. As for having it and not needing it versus needing and not having, where do you live that you would actually NEED a 450 Marlin?  Leaving out the fun factor...just thought your last post a little harsh to all who tried to answer your question honestly.

I don't believe he was trying to bash anyone. (I'm not trying to feed a fire, just clarify to prevent one) It's just what he would say to the nay-sayers who don't shoot larger bore rifles. Many people don't shoot them due to the heavy recoil...myself being one of them. As for needing a 450, there are many hunters that we hunt with considering using 450-45/70 for their stalking gun for various reasons.

 I guess I shot a couple deer with the 45-70, and I don't think it wrecked them any worse than a .270 Win..   About the same as a .348, I guess.  Less than an 8mm mauser handloaded.

The core-lokt is hell on northern Wisconsin deer.   Never found anything better.   Having said that, the Noslers, Hornadys, Winchesters, Barnes, and Sierras worked pretty good too.
