45-70 w/ Cast Boolits

Started my New Year off with a bang..... several of them in fact..........


   I am pretty happy with these, one group is with the 459-360 sized to .459 and the other is with it "as-cast", shot from my trusty Handi-Rifle. The one flyer was me (of course, couldn't blame it on GWB) , the load was 47.5 grs of IMR4895, reasonably stout, but not painfully so, scope "kissed" my glasses a couple of times. :biggrin:  :biggrin: I think it might just convince Mr. Whitetail to do a bang-flop.... oh, and no leading !

    I also shot a bunch of .44 mag. with much poorer results............ a couple of loads with some promise, but still not home on that one.

I use 4895 with hardcast 405's.
I keep mine at trapdoor pressures too.

Spanky, that is a trapdoor load by Hodgdon standards, 47gr under a 385gr cast is just 18.1kcup, 48.5gr under a 405gr cast is 23kcup, trapdoor SAAMI max is 28kpsi/kcup.

Yeah, the max on that load is several grains higher, but this load looks like it is all I need or want, I haven't seen a bison in years and Grandpa shot the last T-rex in these parts.......... ;D ;D I always figure the most powerful load in that book isn't worth spit if you can't consistently get the bullet where you want it.

I load mine with 30.2 gr.
No recoil to speak of and very accurate for me.

I have a new one. Had it for a while. Been piling up everything I think I need to give it a try. Cast bullets of different weights, sights, brass, powder, factory ammo, etc.  All I want out of it is great accuracty with cowboy ammo ballistics. I hope the Beartooth 405's work. From what I've read here, they will.

They are supposed to work good Mike, I haven't personally used them though, I kinda like to make my own. Do yourself a favor and slug your barrel so you know what size your bullets should be, try to buy or size .001 to .002 over actual groove dia. For lighter loads I use that same bullet over a charge of Unique, not quite as accurate but still pretty dang good.

Yes, slug that bore, you never know what you'll find out.

Mine is .4575 and I size my bullets to .459.  It is a wonderful gun to shoot.  I use Universal Clays under a 365 grain flat nose, runs about 1250.

If I were going to buy cast bullets, I would take a micrometer with me to the store.  I don't beleive what they print on the boxes.
