30-30
« on: December 28, 2009, 08:59:12 AM »
Ok i got a deal . I think ?
30-30 win made around the 70's . wood ok metal so so its one of the ones that the blue wears off easy but no rust yet . Paid $265.00 . Had a side mt scope on it . Dealer deals in new stuff . He thought the mount had holes drilled for it . It really used the holes to mount a peep sight and a replacement screw for the finger lever pin screw . Bore is very nice . New screws are ordered . It also had a sling set up - hole in stock and attachment on mag. tube . Did i get took ?

Just waiting for ordered screws to show up . loaded some 150's and 170's to try . Also was looking for bullets at Green Top and all that was aval. was 125 gr FP 30-30 bullets so i got some . I know its light but my favorite rifle is a mod. 94 rifle ( 24" bbl) 7X30 waters . It and 120 gr. bullets have taken alot of deer and turkeys in the past 26 years . Will let ya know how it all works . If the screws get here before sat. maybe it will be tested on deer as the season runs thur. sat here.

Well 4 of the screws arrived ( the 4 filler screws for the holes to mount a rear sight ) . Checked and the other 2 screws were omited . Now reordered !  Well i didn't want to wait so i shot it with the screw for the scope base installed . It was loose and sticking out about 5/16 of an inch . The gun would hit 16 oz water bottles at 50 yards on demand . I realize that ain't min of anything but would sure do a deer in .

With me behind the trigger, I'd do well to place a hit on an eight inch pie plate @ 100 yards with any of my 94's.  Don't seem to matter, I've downed enough deer with them to fill a dump truck, seems the deer can't tell I cain't shoot!   Here your new rifle would bring $300 or better any day, anytime.

Was Buying a Winchester, got a Glenfield!
« Reply #11 on: January 14, 2010, 01:41:43 PM »
OOPS, wrong place!  I appologize for putting this in the .30-30 topic when I meant to start a new one.  I think the problem was the loose nut behind the keyboard ;D

I was about to get a nice Winchester 94 in the 4,980,000 S.N. range, but decided on a minty Glenfield 30G instead.  The rifle has pressed checkering on the stock which I am not really happy with, but otherwise shows very little use.  It is in the 20,000,000 S.N. range (!).  Yikes, 20 million?  It is obviously a Marlin with Glenfield logo.  I put a peep sight on it, and like the option of using a scope if the peep doesn't work for me.  This is the big advantage over Winchesters as far as I am concerned.

Does anyone have any more info on the Glenfields?  How about cast bullets with the microgroove barrel?

Well all the screws are in and everything works well . The 125 gr bullets work well . Its to late to try on deer this year . I loaded some 165 lead bullets and they work , but i need an expander die as i cut a sliver of lead off when seating a bullet .

The Glenfield, as well as a lot of other re-named Marlins that aren't identified as 336's, are pretty much a 336 with cheaper wood.  Some have front sights dovetailed directly into the barrel instead of on a ramp, as the more expensive 336 series does.  They should work every bit as good as the more expensive 336's.  If you want to turn your Glenfield into a project gun, you could buy some fancier wood for a new stock and forearm, and maybe a few other appearance-related items, and have the Marlin of your dreams. You could go as far with it as money will take you, with pretty much the same results as if you started with the more expensive 336 version.

The Glenfields I've owned were more accurate than my Marlin 336s.  I really like them.

The only difference in the two are the stampings on the barrel and stock.

My Glenfields don't have barrel bands.

If that's the case if the  barrel bands on Marlins are putting pressure on the barrel it is a possibility then. Proper fitting could howeve,r solve the problem.
