.35 Whelen

What is the opinion of the brethren on this cartridge?  I have acquired a NEF in this caliber and was planning to trade for a .44 mag simply because I have everything I need except a gun in .44 from a previous episode.  The trade fell through and I've been reading up on the Whelen and am pleasantly surprised at it's versatility.  We have no elk in La. but it looks like the gun might be fun to play with.  Goatwhiskers

I have always been a 35cal fan. 

I do not have a handi in 35 Whelen, but I do have a Custom Mauser '98. Its a wonderfully efficient caliber. You can effectively load it with 357 Cal pistol bullets for very light plinking loads up to stomping 250+gr stompers.

It works well with many different powders. Mine shoots Hornady 200gr with a stiff load of 2520 powder under one inch at 100 and at a velocity of 3000fps. Another compressed load of RL15 and a 225gr Nosler Accubond gets into groups under 1" as well. A load of IMR4320 and a 250gr RN shoots right at 1".

Its a great caliber! Give it a shot, I think you will like it too.

It's a 35cal and based from the 30-06 case. What's not to like? Hornady has listed a new Superformance load for the 35 Whelen loaded with a 200gr SP bullet at a listed 2950fps. Using any of the loads CW cited or this factory load and your LA hogs and deer will not stand a chance. They will die as if stuck by the hammer of Thor. :D

I like the cartridge, but it does have some recoil that others may not like. Shoot it and see.

I have two H&R 35 Whelens, an RMEF Ultra with 26" barrel and a 22" Handi that I had Wayne rechamber to 35 Whelen Improved, 250gr Hornadys at 2650fps aren't too shabby, will be hunting elk this fall with it if we get lucky and draw permits.
