Cal. sales?
« on: January 02, 2010, 01:15:03 AM »
I have a person from Cal. trying to shame me on another forum from banning Cal. sales.
I'm in Ohio and I have a person in Cal. interested in purchasing a trap gun off me. I've done several tranfer's around the country, even Cal. before they decided to change all the rules and seperate themself's  from the rest of the country. I have heard about horror stories about doing transfer's there, as a lot of fella's simply won't ship there. Can someone give me an insight on the red tape it takes to do a legal tranfer there? I am not a FFL holder.

This isn't exactly the right forum for this as darn few will see it here to help tho I honestly am not sure just where to move it to either so I'll do the best I can with it then perhaps someone else with more knowledge will also see it.

I kinda share your feelings on CA, it's really not worth the hassle of dealing with their weird laws. BUT ya really aren't supposed to be shipping guns for transfer of ownership yourself anyway. Deal with an FFL on your end and let them be the one who has to deal with the CA FFL and between them they can work out the details. Problem is you need to know what's legal yourself before you enter into the deal since money usually changes hands long before guns are shipped. They have outright banned or otherwise restricted access to so many guns and have such weird rules on letting guns in that I personally just refuse to even discuss buying or selling a firearm with anyone who lives there.

We have several folks who live in CA who are members here and I'd guess one of them is likely best able to help with this.

 gunrac,

I'm in CA. If you would like to send me a PM, I could tell you what I know about the legalities. A good place to start would be the CA DOJ website's firearm section. I believe they have an FAQ with the info you need about the new transfer laws.

I was in a gun store just the other day here in Alaska and the owner was relating his experience in trying to ship a gun to CA.  He said he would never ever try to do that again.  I did not really glean the details but his statements were of good color.
