SB1 44 mag
« on: December 20, 2009, 08:48:51 AM »
i bought one at my local Gander Mt on Friday for $249 & tx.  You can find lower prices, but this one was right in front of me.  That is worth a $$ premium, especialy when the barrel accessory program is shut down for the holidays.

I slapped on a Leupold 1x4, wiped oil from all the engaging surfaces and ran a dry rag through the barrel.  Took it out and bore sighted at 25 yds.  I had bunch of 240 SWC loaded with about 9 gr unique.    The first 3 shots from this gun were nearly touching at 25 yds.   ;D

Adjusted about an inch for 50 yd shots and spent an hour knocking big holes in frozen pumpkins.   ;D

I will probably bob the barrel to 18" because it is very barrel heavy.  I may add a peep and blade to make it really HANDI.

I really like the synthetic stocks, although I would like to dress this one up with some laminate or nice walnut.  The stocks from a 45LC carbine would look really nice on this gun....

Congrats on your new toy ;)

I also have the .44 as many here do. If you do chop it, keep us informed on any mods. I like the shorty guns. I just have a hard time making myself do it.

Well my 44 mag handi won't shoot the slow loads. It is a tackdriver with full power cast loads but the under 1200 fps ammo will not stabilize. It shoots full power jacketed bullets just fine too. You lucked out. However I spent several hours casting 255 gr. Keith semiwadcutters yesterday. My Handi just eats em up, can't figure it out.

I would suggest a Topper Deluxe Classic stock set because you get great wood and a recoil pad.

Left the gun at Gander Mt gunsmith today.  In a couple weeks it will be 4" shorter.  ;D

I'll probably put a Weaver V3 on it then.  The Leupold has found a new home.

Pics of the updates in a couple weeks. ;)

I'd consider the Nikon Prostaff 2-7X32.  It's cheaper and very very reliable.

Could be, but I already have the Weaver.

I got my 44 Handi back from the Gunsmith today. He installed my Shorty Williams front sight & my 30-40 krag rear sight. It sure looks classic. All it needs now is the BC stock set.
I had my choice of rear sights. It was a difficult decision indeed. Between the Krag & a 1873 Springfield trap door. I have both. The Springfield would mount in the rear rail hole and require an additional D&T to the front of the sight. I elected to save it for a 45-70 barrel in the near future.
I traded for both sights some time ago and just located them in my Gun room. The springfield is like new and fits the Handi barrel perfect.

I will try to get some pix's up Guys. I am not that savvy with this high tech stuff.
I'll try and get my Son who is a Tech to help me.

I will be at the range tomorrow checking it out on paper and making the final adjustments. If my calculations are correct the rear is about .014" high. I will see where it is at 50 yards. This is with the ladder in the horizontal and the existing V notch up. If it is a little high at 50 I will leave it alone, and just clean up the existing V notch to a U with my small rat-tail file. This will match the Williams front sight, and bead. I would like the horizontal for the 50-75 yard, then elevate the adjustable ladder for 100 yards and beyond.
For the final tweeking at 100 yards my 240 grain full 44 loads will be used.

I will start a new thread, later. ;)
