contender frame

 ???  :(  Someone in the know help me out. Bought a early frame(<120,xxx) from edstc. I can deal with the poor bluing, rust pits, and such($195.00). It's been converted by the factory to the newer style. The problem is this-- when you cock the action(not the hammer) with a barrel on and pull the trigger, the hammer comes forward with pretty good force. Take the barrel off and this doesn't happen. Is this normal for a converted frame. I haven't tried to see if it will pop a primer in an empty case yet. Just wondering-this is my first converted frame. None of my higher numbered frames will do this. Please advise.  Pat

There is a safety devise built into the frame that prevents the hammer from hitting the firing pin if the barrel is not fully locked to the frame. The locking bolt/lug on the barrel has to push off this "safety" in order to fire. So, when no barrel is not attached, the hammer does not fall forward far enough to strike the firing pin. It would seem like a weak strike if you pull back the hammer and release it without a barrel or without the barrel in the fully locked position.

What I'm talking about is when the barrel is closed and you pull the trigger WITHOUT cocking the hammer, normally you only hear a click. On this frame(my first CONVERTED one)the hammer will drop with some force against the firing pins. Again: open the action; close the action; don't cock the hammer(it's about 3/16" off the firing pins); pull the trigger and the hammer falls against the firing pins. None of my newer frames will do this. My question is, is this normal for a CONVERTED frame or do I have a problem?  Thanks,  Pat

No problem. I'd be pixxed about the rust myself.

Generally TCs are not shot without a barrel installed.

I have a converted frame. My hammer doesn't move at all when I pull the trigger, it remains off the firing pins.I Just hear the  click of the trigger sear. You might need to send it to tc and have them look at it.

Thanx for the answers. I put an empty but primed case in a barrel, closed it and when I touched the trigger, the hammer fell and put a dent in the primer. Light one, but real worrysome to me. I'll call TC.  Pat
