Loose stock
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:31:15 PM »
I installed a monte carlo synthetic stock on my Sidekick a couple years ago prior to scoping it.
On two occasions now, unfortunately both while hunting, I have noticed that the stock had come loose.
I tightened it down again and it seems secure but I won't be surprised if it loosens again after a range session.
Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening?

If the contoured mating surface of the stock isn't centered in the tang, it will appear to be tight but may not be, as you tighten the bolt you need to work the stock a little to make sure it's perfectly mated to the frame, tighten, wiggle, tighten wiggle, until there's no wiggle. A little blue or purple loctite or finger nail polish applied to the stock bolt threads will insure it doesn't come loose.

Thanks for the reply.

Using the loctite, will I be able to remove the stock should I desire to do so at a later time?

Is there some type of lock washer system that would hold it?

As long as you don't use red loctite which requires heat. A lock washer wouldn't hurt either, but I've never had one loosen and I don't use loctite, in fact the only thing I've ever used is a little white grease so the bolt doesn't rust and freeze.  I suspect the stock wasn't properly oriented to the frame to begin with, coming loose hasn't been a common issue.  The worst problem I've read here is a bolt being cross threaded, there's info in the FAQs that will help avoid that.

Sounds like it could use some bedding compound.
