New 308 Vangaurd Predator 24" barrel
« on: January 17, 2010, 08:28:50 AM »
 Well ,

First trip out and I'm pretty happy with her ( my first Weatherby / Howa ) Had some factory fodder around the gun room and the cheap wal-mart 150gr federal turned out a .8 group at 100 , the Hornady inter-bond 150gr rounds that i used on my buffalo hunt turned in a .5 group at 100 ( both 3 shot groups ) .. None of the hand loads beat those group sizes so I have started work ups... Yesterday I was able to get out with some reloads using Varget, TAC and Reloder 15 under 168 and 180 Amax bullets and the virdict is still out ( didnt have alot of time to play ) even though i had 3 loads of 12 batches show some serious promise ( two of the loads were under an inch at 100 , 1 with the 168gr Amax and another with the 180gr Amax ) ...

I would say that Weatherby/Howa has acheived their claim of 1.5 or under at 100.

Details: Fully Camo'd Vangaurd Predator with the adjustable trigger set at about 3 +/- lbs , With a 1 in 12 twist , 24x44 Tasco World Class Sillouhette ( made in Japan) with a Harris bi-pod ( bipod and scope flat painted to match the rifles colors ) And one happy shooter to top it all off.

I just got one question.  ???

Where the heck do you store a rifle with a 24 foot long barrel?  :o  ;D

OK on second thought two questions. How long a trailer does it take to haul a 24 foot long barrel afield?  :o  ???

Well ,

A 24 foot barreled rifle takes a bit more care in storing and transport , But is a 100% surefire way to get one hole groups at 25 feet...   ;)

Sounds like a sweet rig. Not really surprised by the results, while a little heavy my Vanguards are well-built shooters at a good price. The new triggers are better also.
Thanks for the report.
