Birmingham - Investigators are testing a suspicious powder found in an envelope at the Robert S. Vance Federal Building in downtown Birmingham.
Response teams were called about 12:15pm Sunday. Several firefighters have been in the building with protective gear for more than three hours. Sgt. Johnny Williams with the Birmingham Police Department says the crews will isolate the envelope and take it to be tested.
Williams says no one was directly exposed to the substance.
5th Avenue North was closed at the intersection of 19th Street North in front of the federal building.
The FBI (web) has been called in to help with the investigation. The Jefferson County Health Department, the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, and several ambulances were all at the scene.
