.410?? Use choke or not??
« on: October 25, 2003, 01:23:24 AM »
I just picked up a 14" vent rib 45/.410 barrel, and it came with a rifled tube. Do I use this tube with the shot shells or take it out??? I'm sorry if this hass been asked before but I searched and couldn't find an answer. I don't know anything about this barrell.
Thanx

You leave it in.  The choke tube stops the spin from the rifling and provides some choke.  Do not shoot .45 colt rounds with the choke in place.  On my VR barrel, I just shoot shotgun shells because accuracy with .45 colt is nonexistant.

like what was said, for 410 shot shells you leave the choke in.
If you are gonna shoot 45 long colt, 410 slugs, or 410 buck shot you must remove the choke

The barrel is rifled, but the choke is usuually straight splines to straighten out the shot.  Is this what you have?

.410/.45

I just got one of these barrells at the last gun show. Last week I tried it out. with the choke I got an acceptable pattern at about 15 yards, but without the choke it did not put enough shot in the target. the loads were standard #4. All together I feel that I will probally only shoot .410 as the .45 was not as accruate as my .44 mag. My .45/.410 is an octagon barrell 10" if that makes any difference.

You can send the barrel to T/C, and they will install the correct choke. They may charge you, and again, they may not. What I would do, is wrap it with newsprint, then bubble wrap, or foam, and send it to:
  TCA
  Farmington Rd.
  Rochester, NH,
                          03867
I would use a flat rate Priority Mail envelope, available at the Post Office. Get a Tracking/delivery confirmation number! That way, It will only cost about $5.25, plus insurance. T/C will contact you, should they choose to charge you for the choke, but it has been my experience that they usually don't, when handled this way. Good luck, and I hope this helps>>>>Bug.

Just my 2cents worth for whats it worth...Smaller shot always patterns better..much smaller than 4's..7 1/2's in my barrel.  My barrel is quite accurate with the heavier slugs..especially the 300'sXTP's and cast bullets.
Used a B-square brand shotgun vent rib mount to put a Tasco Red Dot on the barrel and it works great for shotshell and the pistol bullets.

Hey thanks guys, I see exactly what you're talking about now that I know what I'm looking at. The barrel is 14" and shoots nice patterns with 6 shot also. I didn't have any 7-1/2 shot to try out but I will get some soon. I think this is gonna be one of my all time favorite barrel's.

I love to trade barrels, My 10 inch 45/410 is one that i will not trade.
the one i have looks like a normal 10 inch bull barrel with sights. it is my main rabbit and squirrel barrel for latter in the season. I have even shot skeet with it but did not do well.

Keep trying with those skeet.  I finally have gotten to where I can hit 3 out of 5 on the average.  I do not think I will tell you how many I missed to get to that point though.

I just bought mine a few weeks ago.  I have not had a chance to try it on any live birds but I have shot a few cans.  It 15 yards and under a lot of shot hits the target after 20 it spreds out a lot even with the choke.  Has any one hit any birds?

My home is surrounded by pecan trees and we get alot of crows this time of year.  I have shot quite of few of them with my .45LC/.410 and I would have to say that thirty yards is stretching it..25 and in and they are dead meat.  Have taken several squirrels and would say the range limitations are about the same.
