p95 for the trail??
« on: February 13, 2010, 04:56:55 AM »
i have a p95, had two recently but money problems got me to sell one. i am going on a little hiking outdoors adventure with some friends of mine, but they said i need a revolver for a woods gun not an auto. is the p95 ok as a trail gun?, the most critters we'll see around here are coyoties or the occasional rabid skunk, coon or other vermin. black bears have been known to travel thru here but are as rare as hens teeth. so do yall think the p95 is ok for a trail gun?, the only way for me to get a revover now is to sell the p95 and i don't want to do that. thanks for any help.

take a firearm that will be your defense in a ''worst-case scenario''.     in other words,    a P95 is not enough for a black bear  who may show up even though you thought he might be busy somewhere else!

get ready for hell if you aren't properly prepared and a 'blackie' decides to tear you apart.

Yet a little while and the wicked man shall be no more.   Though you mark his place he will not be there.   Ps. 37.

Keep your p95!  Your familair and comforable with it your more likely to bring and be able to use it if you need it.  Don't worry about black bears so much.  Sure any wildlife can do the unexpected but unless in grizzly country there are other critters I think pose a greater hazard than Black Bears.

MJH said it above.  Use the gun you're familiar with and can carry along comfortably.  I use a Ruger SP101 .357 with hot 38spl handloads and don't feel at a disadvantage.  And we have many many black bears here and they cause little problem.   Of course this time of the year they're all in their dens sleeping - for the most part.

I'd get a 900 Ruger tripple barrel revolver w/a 75 round clip.

Seriously, if the P95 won't handle it I think you are in deep dodo anyway.

If 15 rounds of 9mm won't change his mind "run like hell" and let your buddies have at him.

Nothing wrong with your P95.  If you can shoot it well it's the right gun for you.  Remind your buddies that you have more than twice as many rounds at the ready than they do in their revolvers.

Ur P95 is fine, I've had mine for years, accurate and reliable. If you see a bear, put 15 rounds in its head.................

Having something for your own peace of mind is a big part of the "woods gun" idea. P95 is fine.

I have on occasion carried a bottom feeder on the trail and probably will again.  the most important thing is to use what your comfortable with. The P95's a good gun.

If you have a Blackhawk shooting 454 Casull in your safe take the Blackhawk, but there is no reason to buy a Blackhawk when you have the P95.  Of course, for most of us, no reason is a good reason to buy a new gun, but since you have recently had to sell one of your P95s I am guessing you don't have the extra jack to buy a trailgun.

I've had the same problem in reverse.  When I'm not in the woods all my buddys tell me I should put away my trusty six-gun and get one of those slip-a-matics.  Block..or Glock...or somethin' like that.  Carry what you're confident in.  If it's a 22lr...so be it.
Actually, I'm am comin' along pretty good with a P345 and I even got one of those SR-9's, but I ain't carryin' it. ;D

In WI your handgun must have a barrel length of 5.5 in. (firing pin to muzzle) to be legal to hunt with.
That being said, if you're not hunting with it, but carrying for protection you "should" be able to carry anything.
However, depending on the game warden that stops you, he can inturpret your activity however he wants. For that reason most of the folks I know carry a revolver with a 4in. or better barrel just so there is no question about legality and whether the warden is having a bad day or good day.
In WI you go to a DNR court with a DNR judge. Just easier to avoid a problem.

i live in ky., there is no minimum barrel length for hunting here. but i will only be carrying for protection and i'll be open carrying too, i beleive open carry is better and faster when in the woods hiking.

As long as you can run faster than your buddies you got nothing to worry about!

Seriously, a P95 should work just fine.
