If you are going to survive on foot, a 223 AR platform with a 22LR chamber adapter or two would be the ideal in my opinion. 223 can take large game with head shots or multiple shots. Best at 2 legged preditor defence with range. Most hunting can be done single shot anyways so making it a single shot with a chamber adaptor would be for hunting. Also a lightweight take down recurve or long bow with arrows is a good way to get large game quietly or even a cow in the field at night for survival. Also having a group or family of like minded people would allow multiple adaptions. One with 223, one with shotgun, one with 22, one with bow, have some snares handy also for quiet survival. You can alway make jerkey out of a cow smoking it dry. If the senario is in summer, I would try to live off small game and fish, in fall or winter, then kill the larger animals and make jerkey. Learn survival plants for variety and vitamens. Also, in survival you would need to eat the livers of large animals for vitamens if you can't get enough eatable plants. The .357 and 44 mag are also good ideas, Solid lead cast bullets could take small game with head shots, you can also load them with shotshells for birds at close range. I have a take-down recurve bow that weighs only about 2 lbs. I carry it in a quiver with about 36 arrows with field points, I can put on broad heads of the same weight. Not but about 5 lbs overall. A rifle does give you much more range.

from what i have found out looking for an adapter they are not to be used in an auto or pump

I think he was referring to an adapter such as Ciener .22 conversion for an AR-15,quick and easy.The one I have is very accurate.

Swampy, that looks good! If I can only grab one gun, I'd like it to be pretty. We may be keeping company a long time. Reminds me of how the mountain men used to fancy up their one gun, and give them girl's names.

I would want my 22 magnum rifle. Accurate and able to kill anything I need with one well placed shot. And with FMJs it is good for small game.

I kind of like the Handi rifle idea, except I have had two transfer bars broken in a short time. Possibly with the old style hammer, "no transfer bar", I could do that, but I would not be real confident in the reliability for now.

I have fifteen handies and have been shooting them for over six years and have never broken a transfer bar. Maybe I am just lucky.

A question about these handi's in the survivalist role. Are there any weak links that should be addressed? I'm thinking along the lines of springs, extractors, firing pin, that sorta thing. I have an idea about dropping a handi rifle in a length of drain pipe, throw in the spare parts, a big desicant bag and top the thing off with loose ammo. Seal it all up with PVC glue and forget about it somewhere until a time would come to break the seal.

If you do that purge with nitrogen . Use a jim cap on one end pressing in as you seal it . If the jim cap comes back out flush you have a leak and air and moisture is getting in . This can be used as a check for long storage . Some use a plastic weapons storage bag inside as a 2nd. layer of protection . Others use a speical fitting to pull a vac. and fill with nitrogen. It would seem that springs would suffer most in storage as any moisture could cause rust leaving springs useless . There are sites on line that sell these items . I like to keep my gun where i can use and inspect .

Might be handy to have one of those PVC tubes ready to go, and I thought about mounting it to the hull of a boat below the water line.

Something Ive been thinking about is Having a handi combo. say 22 hornet & 357 max. With 200 rounds for each. & have an extra reciever in the pack. Maybe a short 410 barrel . Perfect survival gun is an AR15 with bout 1000 rounds. But I dont got one

This is a multi-answer question. I have a couple of scenarios and choices.

Let's say that Al-Qaida blows up all our power plants and bombs major cities.....
You get the picture. If that is the case I want an AR 15, a pump shotgun with mag extender, and a 45 pistol for everyone in the house. I also want all the ammo I could have. Barricade everything and blow the hell out of anyone who tries to come in.

If I am at my camp and the water gets over the road and I don't have access to the boat for whatever reason, I keep two "survival" guns. I have a 22 mag with 1000 rounds and an old 20 gauge pump with 250 rounds of #6's in the camp. These are for killing food strictly as I always keep a 357 and a couple of boxes of ammo in my truck.

Now in reality for a survival situation today, there will be no government aid. There will be none of you great military service men and women coming to help. There will only be me, my family and whatever we have stored. I have one spot picked out in the backwoods where I have a small shelter built that I hunker down at. I will have a couple of mini 14's and a couple 500 boxes of ammo and my folks will have there gun of choice and all the ammo we have on hand. I have a couple of dry storage boxes of canned food to take with us. There is plenty of wood to build a fire to cook over.

Lets hope that it never comes to that!

while i like my idea earlyer about a .22 mag rifle and a 9mm handgun. another good option imo is an 870 with an 18-20 inch barrel and rifle sights midway has an 18" barrel fixed modified choke and tritium rifle sights i think that woud be a good all around survival gun add a sling swivel cap and your good to go

While Mel Tappan of 80's 'survival genre' isn't my favourite he did make a couple of interesting points.

For fixed location defence, you need. A) An Accurate, powerful rifle that can reach out and keep bad people at a respectful distance. (he favoured a scoped .30-06) b) A pump or semi auto shotgun for close in defence and c) a handgun. If you are moving you need a handgun and a lightweight rifle - but this applies to a great social meltdown scenario.

If you are carrying a firearm for just in case and perhaps surviving for a week or two in event of a natural disaster then a decent handgun and something like the M6 is very practical - You need to harvest food and perhaps signal for help.

When I was younger I read stuff like mel tappan and was always ready for the end of society. Reality was though, that my ancient (1946) Piper cub landed me in several very real but short term survival situations and my unreliable land rover (1964) often left me on foot in remote areas. I have learned to prepare for the most usual everyday 'survival' events and just bear in mind the eotw stuff.
