Whats it like hunting in Colorado?
« on: September 26, 2009, 11:29:11 AM »
I really would like to move to colorado someday soon, but i am unsure of what the hunting policies are like there. I'm used to just going out to buy tags for the year and going where ever i like to hunt. But from what i read so far, is that you need to have your name pulled to hunt in a certain area?  Is this much of a hassle when wanting to hunt each year?

By all means go and get a place in the mts southwest of denver, conifer, pine, baily ,fairplay, are a few towns. you can go to fish and game and buy all the cow tags you want and the season is from sept to feb to fill them.lots of national forest not too crowded to hunt the numbers of hunters go down every year.
the nation that forgets it defenders will itself be forgotten

I'd love to move to the mountains, but i'm working on my degree for Respiratory Care so i need to stay close to the colleges that offer it. One day i plan on getting some land some where but for the time being i need to get a carreer so i can afford all thost nice things in life. Living in a small town makes it hard to pay the bills in this economy. Thanks for the info on those cow tags, i really don't need to hunt for trophys.

When I graduated from college (BS in Animal Sci) in 1976, I fully intentended to move to Co.  I made a couple of trips there that year and looked the whole state over.   Due to the higher cost of living in CO, I came to the conclusion I could live in AR, save my money and big game hunt in CO and still be $ ahead.   I have vacationed, skied or hunted every year since in CO, WY, or MT and still live in AR.

The housing prices seem to be pretty fair at the moment, i just checked gas prices and they are the same where i'm at now. I understand that keeping the house warm in the winter would cause the expenses to go up.  What higher cost of living are you speaking of? I plan to take a trip up there soon to get a first hand view on things so any input you have would be appreciated.

I was elk hunting near Montrose a couple of weeks ago and the gas there was about 75 cents a gal. more than here at home.  Residential housing prices are much higher in Colo than AR.  Back when I was looking you had to have at least 40 acres in order to drill a well there also.   So if you wanted to live in the boonies couldn't just buy a lot and start building.  The building codes and permits were difficult to meet unless you were in a development area or had a lot of real estate.  The tourism industry and ski resorts are taking a hit and there may soon be some good buys on condos near the ski slopes.  ie, ski areas are in the mountains and good hunting can often be found in the mtns.  You may want to contact a realtor and see what the utility bills, taxes and insurance would cost on a house there.  When I was looking, the cost was practically prohibitive for me.  Good luck

Tik,

In the end it comes down to lifestyle choices.  I live in western Colorado and grew up in eastern Colorado.  I make a bit less money than I might elsewhere but I live in God's Country. We own our own home and border BLM land.  My Wife and I are outdoor enthusiasts and spend our weekends spring, summer, and fall, in the nearby mountains.  We hunt, hike, fish, camp and ride Mountain Bikes.  In the winter we can choose between skiing the best snow in the United States (the backcountry is free) either lift served or backcountry.  Or we can head west into the Utah desert/canyon country.  Archery hunting for elk is over the counter in most units and 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons are also OTC in a great many units.  First and fourth rifle are draw only but most can be drawn on a yearly basis.  There are also multiple units in which you can get as many cow elk tags as you care for.   Mule deer hunting is not quite as open as it is draw only in all units.  I can draw my backyard with no points every year (unit 41).  There are turkey and other birds (upland game birds are not abundant in most places).  Neither of us could imagine living anywhere else and that's a good thing.  You could get a job in the Grand Junction area in your field as it is a regional hub (at 120,000 people it is the largest city for four hours driving time in any direction).  There's more to do than hunt but it's a place where you can get as much of hunting as you want. Zoning and building permits are a good thing, otherwise it might end up, well, like I imagine Arkansas to be like.
