recommendation for a decent electronic coyote caller
« on: February 16, 2010, 08:29:32 AM »
Hello, I am new to coyote hunting.  But I can think of nothing better to do with my AR-15 during the off season.  I have a ranch in Bloomingdale, OH and have several good elevated positions to shoot form.  I would lke to purchase a sub $200 electronic coyote caller.  I purchased a cheap sub $40 electronic caller.  It sounds nice but the volume is very low.... you get what you pay for.

Please let me know your recommendation for a good, loud, dependable electronic caller with a remote.  Thank you

I would recommend the Power Dogg, but I am having problems with mine.  However, I would recommend the Foxpro spitfire.  I have never used it, but I have heard lots of good things about it, like you can down load sounds to it.  Remeber, I don't own one but have heard lots of great things about this caller on many other forums.

If I were you, that what I would get.

Hope this helps

I called FoxPro and spoke with them about the Spitfire.  They told me I should expect a sound volume only a bit louder than my cheap little $40 electronic call.  They explaiend to me that anything that runs on 4AA batteries and is under $300 will not have great sound amplification ability.  They said the Spitfire is a great unit for the money but just not extremely loud.  Of course the suggestion was to jump up to the $399+ unit.  One thing they reiterated to me is that a coyotes hearing is multitudes better than ours... so just because we think it not loud the coyotes may still be able to hear it.

One interesting point was if you buy it from a big box sotre it comes pre set with various calls; however, if you buy it from the recommended dealer they will set it up for you with the calls that you want.  Regards,

Travis

louder is not better for coyotes.  ihave had much better luck calling quietly than loudly.  i think more importantly is to be set up properly and to try and set up realistic scenarios. may wanna spend money on a decoy if its legal.

I did not realize that... but it makes sense, I call softly for turkey and deer so why not coyotes.  The only reason I wanted to call loudly is to draw them in from a distance.  I know where the deer and turkey live on my property but coyote are not as abundant.

Most of my predators that I have called in come in with mouse squeaks and low volume.Always start your set low.you can always increase the volume, but if you start out loud you could scare the crap out of something close to you and not get a shot.

I have found the best thing that works for me a Cass Creek Big Horn speaker, with 50ft of wire.  Then I plug it into my son't old I-Pod.  I down loaded the sounds I wanted from the internet and it works good enough for me.  I have a fox pro, and it also works good, but it is not reprogramable for me, and does not have all the calls I want.

This is a little out of line here but it works for me.  I mounted a loud speaker on the front of my Suzuki Samurai.  I wired it into the radio and tape player.  The rear speaker control operates the loud speaker.  I drive down the river bed after dark with no lights on playing a tape of rabbits or baby animals.  Partner uses a red spotlight.  We get Foxes, Lynx, Coyotes, Wolves, and Bears.  Other times I park out in a small bunch of brush, out on the river bed.  Put a chair up on top of the Sammy, plug in a baby Moose tape, and let it play as I sit on top of the Sammy.  Have called in Bears and Wolves using this method.

Some people would say "you have too much time on your hands" ;D

But I can't think of a better way to spend it. Nice setup :'(

You are so close to Heaven already. Lucky Man ;)

I have the FX3. It's a little bit pricey but I like it. Get what you can reprogram and it should last you a long time. If you get what you find you don't like, it will cost you more in the long run. I think they went down $100 shortly after I got mine :'( >:( Check around. Not sure but I thought you could get refurbished tradeins from Foxpro at one time ???

Go to www.predatormasters.com and look under the tech articles.  You can make very good caller that runs from a mp3 player.  For around $50.00 you can make a caller that sounds very close to one of the $500.00 Foxpros.  It will not be remote but you can add delays (time with no sound) in the mp3 sounds.  You just find the spot you want to setup the caller, turn it on and walk to your place to setup the hunt.  The caller will do the rest.  You can also make a decoy from a arrow and a turkey feather!!! Works like charm!!
