barrel change??

this may be a stupid question...i have a swede mauser and have seen barrels for sale from online places, is it possible to change the barrels on bolt actions rifles easily?  from different seasons if i wanted to keep pretty much the same gun but just change barrels out is it a lot more involved than just screwing one out and replacing with the newer one?

you can unscrew the existing barrel  and have a gun smith convert it and receiver to interupted threads. then you can have the barrels threaded with interupted threads to make it a switch barrel gun. each barrel would hafta be fitted and chambered and headspaced. also if scoped every time you switched barrels you'd hafta realign your scope. cost would also probably be kinda prohibitive. my opinion and worth what you paid for it. good luck and merry christmas friend, bubba.

It's very possible but it's not a good idea. The interupted threads usually don't prove satisfactory with high pressure rounds. They begin to loosen over time from the stress. Savage in the 99 had to switch to full threads when the interupted thread take downs started developing headspace problems.. The biggest problem is cost. The cheapest way to get a switchbarrel gun is to buy an Encore from TC. While a single shot that's not a huge problem for a hunting rifle and barrels are very reasonable. Rquire almost no tools and the telescopes are mounted to the barrel so for most practical purposes the sight in should be OK. I'd likely check it cnyway but that's just me..

Brownell sells Fitted mauser barrels large ring 98 and small ring 93-96 that are short chamber various calibers.  Most gunsmith can finish chamber by hand and set headspace.  The barrels list for the 93-96 are chamber for low pressure calibers 250 Sav,6.5x55 and 7x57 some of those barrels you see may not work if you have 93-96 mauser action.  Wilson,Pac-Nor also sell fitted barrel with short chamber for the mauser actions also.  I'm not sure if these are the type barrels you posted about but hope this helps.

Hi,

Just wanted to add a couple more pennies to the pile.


Get a Savage rifle with a box magazine. Not only can you change barrels quickly with a barrel nut setup but you can change bolt heads to fire almost any cartridge within reason. Savage bolts are 2-piece units that are easy to break down. Also most barrel makers that have pre-threaded barrels make fully chambered drop in barrels for the 10/110 series rifles.
