ROSSI FRONT SIGHT
« on: September 14, 2003, 04:28:00 PM »
I have a Rossi mod 92 I bought just prior to the cross bolt safety and I dont like the front sight on it. Problem is its one piece with the front barrel band   :(   Can any one tell me where the best place is to get a front barrel band with the replaceable front sight ? Love the gun , hate the sights ... Thanks

Try doing a web search for Rossi authorized dealers (gumshops).

use keywords "Rossi firearms"

Just have local gunsmith grind sight on the band off and cut a standard 3/8" dovetail ahead of the band to take any dovetail blade just like later Winchester carbines.

You might try http://www.stevesgunz.com/SightSG.htm He installs a custom made sight on Rossi 92's.

On the older Rossi's I have seen, the sight is on the bbl band, but the newer ones have it dovetailed into the bbl.  I like Rossi sights with the flat rear and post front, gives a pistol type sight picture and seems easier for these "old eyes" to deal with.  I do like the cleaner look of the sight on the band but thats strictly a personal thing.  Make 'em the way you want them and enjoy shooting that gun!     44 Man

THe Winchester 92 had the front sight dovetailed in the barrel.  Look at pictures of original Winchesters.  I don't know why Rossi chose to incorporate the sight in the barrel band, but it would be a better setup to grind it off and install a proper sight on the barrel where it belongs.

I have a Rossi 92 carbine in 357 mag that is used for Cowboy Rifle, Pistol cartridge silhouette shooting.  I can't say that I really like the front sight, I wish it had a dovetail so I could install a globe front sight with inserts.  I had it drilled for a Lyman 66 reciever sight and everything works great.  The Lyman, Williams, and old Redfields all take the same holes so once it is drilled and tapped for one you can use any of them.  If you can find a redfield, it is the best but they all work good.

You can only hit the target if the barrel is pointed in the right direction when the bullet leaves the barrel.

My eyes arent so young neither. Thats one reason I would like a front sight that could be changed so I could try some different setups which may work better. I think they made them that way because it is cheaper for them to produce or was, maybe.
Thanks for all the info

WD........If you look close there is a blade pinned in the front sight barrel band...........Rossi has it polished and blued so  well you can barely discern it. You might remover the pin and blade and replace it with a blade sawn off of a dovetail sight.........Some Rossi's I've seen had a brass blade pinned into the band..........I think a brass blade would work pretty good...............Might try it on mine.......
