HS7 and Win. 571 powdersI
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:52:16 PM »
I just bought from and oldsporting good store 4 LBS. of Winchester 571 powder for $7 a pound.  It is the same as HS7. Where can I get some reloading data. Will hogdon or win, give  it out. I was using data from Oregon Trails on there bullets for the 45 colt in 255 gr. I would like to use this powder with my 357 also. Mostly with cast bullets. The old man told me he had some Win, powders stashesd away. 540 and 571. Told me it is going for the prices that are marked on the cans. Like new. There is no where I can find info. HELP!!!

Win 571 and Win 540 are great 20 ga. shotgun powders. Hated to see them discontinued. I also have read that HS6 and HS7 are the same as 540 and 571. I also understand that HS7 has been discontinued. All Winchester loading guides I have do not list 571 with .357 loads, only 231 and 296. They do have data for some other calibers with 571 and 540. Some of my loading manuals have data for HS7 with some .357 bullet weights.
Hornady 4th Edition has HS7 data for all jacketed bullets-no cast data
Speer Manual 11th has HS7 data for 125,140,158gr. jacketed-no cast data
Nosler #4 has HS7 for 150 jacketed only
Hornady 5th has data for 110 and 125 jacketed only
Lyman 47th has data for HS7 with 125, 180 jacketed and 121RN  and 141 WC lead linotype (same 2 loads with the lead bullets in a 1980 Lyman Cast Bullet manual)
Lyman 48th and 49th uses HS7 with 125 jacketed and 120 gr linotype lead
  Hornady 3rd uses HS7 with 110, 125, 158, and 160 Jacketed only
Hornady 7th for 110 and 125 jacketed

Midways LoadMap .357Magnum tests almost all manufacturers Jacketed bullets with HS7

Seems that HS6 is listed more for lead bullets than HS7 is. There are some loads listed in my manuals for .38Special with HS7. If you're interested in any particular bullets and data from specific manuals reply. Too much to type out all of it. Midway's .357 Mag LoadMap tests HS7 with different manufacturers bullets in most jacketed weights.

i ran into a keg of hs7 myself and finding data is tough. What i ended up doing was using top end hs6 loads for my starting loads and working up slowly from there.
