Air America
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:34:56 PM »
Today it was announced that Air America is in bankruptcy and will no longer do live programming. I thought they went out of business a couple of years ago, so they must be hanging on somehow.

There's a radio station AM 950 that in my area that used to be affiliated with them. I've listened to it when they still had enough transmission power to get their signal across the street to nearby radio receivers. Today I can't hear it in downtown Minneapolis, they must have a little 15 dollar Radio Shack walkie-talkie that they broadcast from.

When I could detect their signal the advertisers were all unions and lawyers representing labor issues. They did have an actual business advertise there one day and I was surprised to hear it.  The broadcasting was without talent, and was difficult to listen to because it was so badly done.

I remember when Air America was starred with now senator Al Frankenstein. It was an incredibly bad show, ultra poor quality, zero preparation, no talent evident. I'm surprised they lasted as long as they did.

I think they fail because they're trying to compete with public radio, all the major broadcast networks, and most of the major newspapers. The market is already saturated with left leaning news, so there's not much room for stuff like Air America to thrive in.  It's just too competitive.
