This is a modified Model 96. A local gunsmith changed the bolt handle, safety trigger and cut the barrel to 24". I cut down and refinished the stock. It is a Carl Gustav made in 1921. What make this otherwise ordinary gun unique is the fact that it is the most accurate rifle I own, and I own many modern hunting rifles. The barrel was not tapered, the steps were left as is, this gives it an unusually blunt look, but I like it.

Very nice Cheese, thanks for sharing. I'll post pics of my small ring build when I get around to building it. I Am starting with a bare spanish small ring action, I already have a Adams and Bennet 6.5X55 barrel for it and a side saftey Timney trigger.

when i did my swede, i wanted to taper the barrel but my smith said no way, he said them steps were there for a reason.something about the barrel heating as yu shoot. he said the makers knew something we dont know.its  also about the most accurate rifle i own. am haveing trouble finding a nice modern type wood stock for it.i modified the orig stock and it turned out good but i do like a pistol grip on my deer rifles.

I hear what you are saying about the pistol grip. What I like about the original stock is the finger grooves in the fore arm, i like them very much.

That's a nice looking old swede, Cheese. You did a fantastic job on the stock. I like the contour of the barrel. Sort of makes the rifle look it's sporting a varmint barrel.

To me it looks like his Smith forged the original bolt handle.

I like the sweep at the bottom, Thanx. What can be used as a heat sink while welding on the the bolt?

hillbill:  go onover to Graybeard's links page and look for stockmakers.  I know we have at least one who makes sporter stocks for 96/38 Mausers.  HTH.

Billy is right. I asked the smith to model it after the Abolt and that is what he came up with.

Replacing a bolt handle on a small ring mauser is a very touchy deal. The square base of the small ring bolt handle is machined as a bolt stop to keep the bolt from rotating past 90 degrees.
